The Educational Specialist II - Math Continuous Improvement is located within the Office of Math and helps drive the district's math efforts by managing and supporting, through the lens of continuous improvement, projects to advance math outcomes for students.

Essential Functions

  • Leads the design and implementation of a multi-year grant-funded continuous improvement project with a network of schools.
  • Works with Math and Continuous Improvement teams to identify theories of improvement for prioritized math initiatives, integrating both evidence-based best practices and the lived experiences of teachers and students in City Schools.
  • Implements the right routines and metrics to understand and drive progress for prioritized initiatives.
  • Applies strategic thinking and a continuous improvement approach to frame complex problems, identify measures and provide meaningful insights.
  • Stays up to date on current research and best practices in middle school mathematics content and pedagogy, and continuous improvement.
  • Supports the creation and implementation of continuous improvement practices at scale, in collaboration with multiple offices.
  • Documents and communicates best practices in both continuous improvement and in math to help drive system-wide change.
  • Collaborates with an initiative-taking team from multiple offices across the organization to advance implementation of teaching and learning's math strategy in the district.
  • Attends a regular cadence of math team meetings.
  • Uses data collected to strategically support the needs of teachers and schools in the district in collaboration with internal and external partners.
  • Provides coaching, as needed, to build continuous improvement skills and capacity in teams across the organization.
  • Supports the design and facilitation of professional learning opportunities to build staff's continuous improvement capacity.
  • In collaboration with analytic staff, synthesize data and produce reports that communicate compelling insights that are connected to and relevant to the broader system's efforts to achieve improved outcomes.

Maximum Salary 107495.00

Minimum Salary 82017.00

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education or related field. Degree must be from an accredited college or institution.
  • Valid Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and Advanced Professional Certificate required.
  • Five plus years of experience working in local districts and / or schools.
  • Six to eight years of professional experience, with proven experience in successfully designing and managing complex projects and initiatives.
  • Previous teaching experience in math; urban experience preferred.
  • A preference for candidates with formal Improvement Science experience and knowledge (e.g., implementing a model of CI in a work setting, using data cycles to inform practice and adjustments to practice, building capacity around using a continuous improvement model, using improvement science of related methodologies to support system change), with an interest in candidates who have led or participated in network improvement communities.

  • Expertise in continuous improvement methodologies and experience with coaching others on how to apply a system- and improvement-mindset when faced with complex problems.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills; comfortable with ambiguity and shifting priorities.
  • Move easily between big picture thinking and managing relevant project details.
  • Have an orientation to action, including the ability to identify a plan forward for complex projects.
  • Demonstrated belief in and commitment to the potential of youth to succeed in rigorous educational settings.
  • Approaches their role with a deep-seeded sense of personal accountability for the success of City Schools' Racial Equity Policy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated through understanding the importance of team building, collaboration, collective problem-solving, and the ability to provide and receive constructive feedback.
  • Experience with elevating the role of users and feedback loops in into fast-paced and complex environments.
