Job description

Description

Do you enjoy working in a collaborative environment to find innovative solutions to complex technical problems?

Do you want to learn more about United States military systems and Department of Defense (DoD) Operations that have real-world impacts?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our exceptional Air Combat and Strike Mission Analysis Group at APL.

We are seeking an intern to help us create models, run simulations, analyze data and ultimately improve the capabilities of our nation's developmental and deployed air and strike weapon systems. You will collaborate with a team of engineers and analysts who perform innovative research, modeling and analysis that fuels decision making for a variety of military applications.

As an Analyst, Modeling and Simulation Intern you will...

Work side-by-side with our analysts to build, validate and refine physics-based models of aircraft, missiles and sensors, while implementing propulsion, aerodynamics, and guidance dynamics with tools such as AFSIM (Advance Simulation Framework), C++, Python, MATLAB. You will have an opportunity to process real-world data sets, spot performance trends, define uncertainty bounds, and create clear visualization and reports that turn raw data into actionable insight. You will communicate your findings effectively by preparing technical briefs, and presenting results to interdisciplinary teams and key decision makers. Throughout your experience you will receive mentorship from scientists and engineers, while participating in internal seminars and networking events, helping you accelerate your professional growth and giving you a clear pathway to a full-time career in defense, aerospace or related fields.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Are pursuing B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. in Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other engineering fields
  • Have proven ability to break down complex technical challenges and deliver workable solutions (e.g., coursework, capstone, research, previous internships.)
  • Have an understanding of programming basics and software development protocols
  • Can work collaboratively in multidisciplinary groups and also take ownership of independent tasks
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 GPA scale (unofficial transcripts are acceptable).
  • Are a U.S. Citizen and can obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret Level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have experience in air or space systems or high-performance simulations
  • Published papers, conference presentations, or open-source contributions relevant to modeling and simulation
  • Have hands-on experience with MATLAB, Python, C++, AFSIM or other DoD simulation frameworks
  • Have an Active Security Clearance
