Primary Responsibilities

The Commercial Management Director is responsible for leadership, strategy and delivery of key initiatives that drive the advancement of HDR’s Commercial Management Business Class. The objective of the Commercial Management Business Class is to foster a community of practice that connects and elevates Commercial Management professionals across HDR’s six business groups (Architecture, Building Engineering Services, Federal, Resources, Transportation, and Water) and positions HDR as an industry leader recognized by our clients for exceptional project execution.

The Commercial Management Business Class includes professionals responsible for providing the following services, both internally and externally : contract management and administration, dispute management, subcontractor management, contract negotiations support, risk management support, claims management, and project / program dashboards / reporting.

The Commercial Management Director will establish strong partnerships with Business Group, Market Sector, Business Class, Professional Services, and Operations Leadership to align the Commercial Management practice with HDR’s Cross Sector construct and drive the practice to achieve the following goals :

  • Elevate the technical practice and its people.
  • Align with market sectors and operational areas.
  • Build and maintain a company-wide community of practice.
  • Champion the matrix organization.
  • Support exceptional project delivery.

This position will also be responsible for directly supporting project teams to successfully deliver projects. The role is client billable for approximately 30% of the time.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide subject‑matter expertise to foster an industry‑recognized reputation for professional excellence.
  • Collaborate across the organization to elevate the reputation of the Commercial Management practice.
  • Produce, improve, and implement standard processes and procedures to enhance commercial management elements and project performance.
  • Support talent acquisition and retention for the practice’s technical profile, working with market sectors to size the practice for success.
  • Lead technical development of Commercial Management professionals that drives exceptional project delivery and commercial success.
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of technical practices, standards, and expectations to improve project outcomes.
  • Act as a boundary spanner and information broker to pair expertise and resources with projects during pursuit and execution phases.
  • Lead work‑sharing communications to enhance technical excellence and utilization locally and nationally.
  • Evaluate and leverage technology solutions to elevate the practice and serve internal / external client needs.
  • Communicate production needs and collaborate with Geographical Operations Leadership to influence staffing and expertise levels.
  • Provide hands‑on mentoring and team participation to support Commercial Managers.
  • Mentor staff in the nuances of different market sectors.
  • Foresee emerging drivers and influence professionals to improve project performance.
  • Champion a quality culture across the practice, including Geographical Operations units.
  • Advocate for professional development and create tools : best practices, policies, papers, forms, presentations, credentials, recognition, and automation.
  • Act as a role model of HDR values, code of conduct, professional / ethical standards, and licensing / credentialing requirements.
  • Champion HDR culture : Client Service, Teamwork, Entrepreneurial Attitude, and integrity.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Maintain a professional or engineering registration.
  • Experience in commercial management within the AEC industry.
  • Experience on large, complex AEC projects, particularly those delivered via alternative delivery methods.
  • Working knowledge of Project Management Information System software such as QuickBase, applied to projects for commercial management purposes.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Sciences, Architecture, Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in related management roles.
  • Experience managing and developing diverse teams.
  • Collaborative experience with company operations, technical directors, and marketing managers on Cross Sector efforts.
  • Commitment to quality, improvement, and HDR values.
  • In‑depth understanding of HDR vision, mission, and values.
  • Professional and ethical role model.
  • Commitment to implementing delivery of business group service area expertise and high-quality products to support HDR’s long‑term goals.
  • Active participation in our employee‑owned culture is essential.

    Benefits and Compensation

    We provide a comprehensive benefits package that promotes employee ownership, health, performance, and success, including medical, dental, vision, short‑ and long‑term disability, life insurance, an employee assistance program, paid time away, parental leave, paid holidays, a retirement savings plan with employer match, employee referral bonus, and tuition reimbursement. The expected compensation range is $181,580 – $259,400.
