Position Description:
Advanced Practice Provider - Certified Nurse Midwife - UAB OB/GYN

Work schedule: Full-time, benefited
- Alternating scheduling including 8- and 12-hour shifts
-Weekends, holidays and call are required.

CME allowance: Full-time benefited APPs receive an annual $2,000.00 CME allowance. This can be used for recertification, applicable fees, CME courses, etc. that occur after a new employee's start date.

The UAB Division of Women's Reproductive Health is seeking a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), to provide full-scope midwifery care. Functions include conducting history and physical exams for low-risk obstetric patients and well-woman gynecologic visits, evaluating and managing OB and GYN complaints in the outpatient setting. The CNM will also provide inpatient management of low-risk labor and birth, intrapartum support, and immediate postpartum care. The CNM will work both autonomously and in collaboration with other APP's and physicians. Experience is preferred but not required. Must be professional, caring, dependable, a team player, and multi-task oriented. Responsibilities include performing procedures such as initial management of obstetrical emergencies, suturing of first and second degree lacerations, endometrial and vulvar biopsies, IUD insertion and removal, and Nexplanon insertion and removal. Additionally, the CNM will participate in the education and supervision of junior residents, offering clinical instruction and guidance in labor and birth management

General Responsibilities:
To provide medical care and treatment within established scope of practice to medical services patients as assigned by and under the direction of the collaborating physician (Section 610-X-5 of the Alabama Board of Nursing Administrative Code) or under supervision of a Board-Certified Physician (Section 540- X-7 of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners Administrative Code). The collaborating physician shall be available for direct communication for consultation and referral or arrange for the same medical coverage by a physician who is pre-approved by the State Board of Medical Examiners in the same manner as the collaborating physician of record. To coordinate plan of care, discharge and specialty referrals as appropriate to meet the age specific needs of the patient. To plan and coordinate health care education for patient, family and other health care providers as needed. To perform comprehensive physical examinations and assessments. To interpret, analyze and evaluate patient's medical record and social data. To perform and/or assist the physician with procedures per collaborative agreement. To coordinate and participate in performance improvement activities.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Provides clinical coverage in obstetrics and gynecology services, including a mix of ambulatory and inpatient care. Inpatient care may include primary or consult services.
2. May work atypical hours and fewer days per week utilizing a shift based model or traditional 8 hours
per day/ 5 days per week methodology. Full time APPs working 12-hour clinical days will work 14-16
clinical days/month.
3. A full time APP has clinical effort of 90% of time patient-facing. Patient access expectations are
established by UAB Medicine leadership and the APP's respective department.
4. May be required to work nights, weekends, or holidays depending on practice coverage needs.
5. May be required to provide call coverage (up to five nights per month prior to additional
compensation).
6. May be required to stay for inclement weather when necessary.
7. May have "at risk" call for additional inpatient clinical days when necessary to ensure safe, effective patient care.
8. Examples of performance metrics include traditional productivity metrics (i.e. encounters or wRVU), patient access, throughput, quality, patient experience and academic contribution.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
Master's degree in Nursing with a Nurse-Midwife certification required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations:
• Currently certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) with Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) Specialty
by the Alabama Board of Nursing required.
• Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment. Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.
