Job description

Fire Sprinkler Inspector

The Fire Sprinkler Inspector performs testing, inspection, and maintenance of fire sprinkler systems to ensure proper operation and compliance with applicable codes and standards. The role includes documenting system conditions, deficiencies, and necessary improvements through clear and detailed inspection reports.

This position also upholds a high level of professionalism by communicating findings and recommendations clearly and effectively. Capable of completing complex and specialized testing, maintenance tasks, and troubleshooting associated with the following systems : including but not limited to wet systems, dry systems, preaction systems, hydrants, fire pumps, and standpipes. Troubleshooting equipment and / or system failures, supervising vendors when necessary, and interfacing with customers.

The senior technician in fire systems is expected to work independently without supervision and have experience with the skilled use of all necessary hand and power tools.

Function / Duties of Position

  • Maintenance and Diagnosis

Ensures all fire sprinkler systems are fully operational and code compliant. This includes performing routine inspections, testing, and preventive maintenance on all sprinkler system components, such as sprinkler heads, piping, valves, pumps, and alarms.

  • Performs general preventive or corrective maintenance tasks pertaining to the following campus systems including but not limited to wet systems, dry systems, preaction systems, hydrants, fire pumps, standpipe systems and associated components.
  • Diagnoses system issues and ensures proper water flow and system activation.
  • Troubleshoots to component level and perform adjustments or repairs to equipment when feasible and allowed by code.
  • Coordinates with qualified vendors or contractors to make repairs.
  • Advises the Lead Sprinkler Technician if major repairs are required and maintains all necessary documentation.
  • Works with the Coordinator to schedule shutdowns and completes impact notifications utilizing standard shutdown procedures to notify occupants, coordinating any needed support personnel.
  • Inspects and coordinates with vendor or contractor work to ensure compliance with applicable code standards on completion of repairs or alterations and informs the Lead Sprinkler Technician of any issues.
  • Maintains detailed records of inspections, maintenance, and corrective actions in compliance with NFPA standards, local codes, and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Assist licensed sprinkler fitters in installation of new or replacement equipment.
  • Performs specialized testing and inspections of fire suppression and fire alarm systems (as identified by the Fire Systems Coordinator) to maintain regulatory and code compliance required by any of AHJs (authorities having jurisdiction).
  • Responds to emergencies, such as fire alarms, system leaks, water flows, tripped systems, valve problems, and assists emergency personnel.
  • Attends all required meetings and trainings and successfully completes any proficiency evaluations.
  • Trains other facilities staff in fire sprinkler emergency procedures, including one-on-one walks with all new staff on main valve and floor valve locations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Seven years of system or trades related experience.
  • Within six months of hire : obtain a Certificate of Fitness issued by Portland Fire & Rescue for "Automatic sprinkler system installation, alteration, testing, service or repair"
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • High School or GED equivalent.
  • Experience working in a hospital environment.
  • Three years of experience, testing, inspecting, and maintaining fire suppression systems.
  • Computer skills : beginning - intermediate.
  • Detailed knowledge of practices, methods, materials, tools, rules, and regulations of the fire sprinkler trade
  • Experience with research, understanding, and ensure compliance with all codes and regulations including federal, state, and local as well as industry standards.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 10, 25, and 13 codes.
  • Experience with Building Reports.
  • Training to operate laser alignment tool for pumps.
  • Ability to perform hydrant flow testing and forward flow testing as well as Hydrostatic testing of Sprinkler Systems.
  • Familiarity working with FM-200 or other clean agent suppression systems.
  • Familiarity working with fixed kitchen hood suppression systems.
  • Familiarity with helipad foam suppression systems.
  • Valid Oregon or Washington driver's license.
  • NICET level I for Inspection and Testing of Water Based Fire Protection Systems.
  • Certificate of Fitness issued by Portland Fire & Rescue for "Fixed fire extinguishing systems installations, alteration, testing, service or repair"
  • Certificate of Fitness issued by Portland Fire & Rescue for "Commercial cooking hood and duct system cleaning"
  • NICET Level II or higher for Water-Based Systems.
  • Additional Details

    Normal duties require 40 hours per week. Position requires that the incumbent respond to on-call assignments, overtime and after-hours call backs as needed.

    Conditions may include working outside in inclement weather, walking, standing, bending, and stooping for extended periods of time, lifting and carrying heavy objects, crawling in small, cramped spaces, working from ladders, scaffolds, and other above ground locations including high, sloping roofs, working in extreme temperatures, working around moving machinery and in confined spaces, working in environments containing dust, odor, high levels of noise, exposure to dirt, biological, chemical, and radiological hazards, danger of steam and hot water burns, electric shock, infection, and minor injuries.

    Employees are required to use all applicable OSHA approved safety apparatus when working around any hazardous condition or environment. The incumbent must be able to respond and help contain emergency situations (storm, earthquake, explosion, utility interruption, catastrophic equipment failure, etc.) and, therefore, must be able to work as needed in any of the conditions described.
