The primary role of a Phlebotomist I is to support various duties, troubleshoot issues, provide training, and offer workflow recommendations. This position involves drawing blood, labeling specimens, centrifuging, recording maintenance data, and updating patient information.
Responsibilities
Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge samples.
Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously to patients.
Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
Package specimens for transport and store them at required temperatures.
Follow procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Attend annual department training sessions.
Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results.
Essential Skills
1+ years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital or clinical setting with at least 30+ blood draws per day, covering all age groups from pediatric to geriatric.
Proficiency in phlebotomy, blood draw, specimen collection, and processing.
Strong customer service skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Flexibility to work at different sites.
Knowledge of chemistry, hematology, microbiology, coagulation, and urinalysis.
Certification such as ASCP or AMT is a plus.
High School diploma is required.
Work Environment
The position covers the Birmingham / Hoover / Tuscaloosa area, with potential travel up to one hour, for which mileage can be expensed. The role may start as a contract but could transition to a permanent role. Phlebotomists will work in fast-paced sites, including LabCorp at Walgreen in Birmingham, AL, from Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM with a one-hour lunch break. The environment requires drawing and processing of urine and bloodwork, with an average of 35-40 draws per day. The role supports IOP accounts and offers opportunities for growth within one of the largest clinical laboratories in the world.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $18.00 / hr.
