Job Summary

The Recreation Supervisor - Community Outreach & Engagement is responsible for leading the development, coordination, and implementation of inclusive community engagement strategies that strengthen relationships between Milwaukee Recreation and the diverse communities it serves. This position focuses on increasing participation and access for underserved, underrepresented, and historically marginalized populations by building partnerships, coordinating outreach initiatives, and ensuring equitable delivery of recreation programs and services across the city of Milwaukee.

Salary Range : $64,538 - $92,688

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required in public health, social justice, sociology, social welfare, public administration, recreation administration, or related field.
  • May substitute two (2) years of experience for one (1) year of education (a minimum of 9 years of experience without a bachelor's; a minimum of 5 years with an associate's).

  • One (1) year of relevant, full-time experience or equivalent in culturally responsive programming, equity-focused community planning, and / or partnership development.
  • Experience working for a large public organization in an urban setting.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and another language commonly spoken in the community preferred (e.g., Spanish, Rohingya, Arabic, Hmong).
  • Responsibilities

  • Builds and maintains cross-sector partnerships with local agencies and nonprofits and other public-sector entities to increase brand awareness, share information, expand service reach, leverage resources, and strengthen community trust.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates community engagement strategies that increase participation and satisfaction among residents, particularly those in underserved neighborhoods.
  • Serves as the departments liaison to community groups, cultural organizations, schools, faith-based entities, and neighborhood associations to identify recreation and service needs.
  • Coordinates community assessments, surveys, and listening sessions to gather data on service gaps, participation trends, and access barriers, while regularly visiting department programs to stay informed about current offerings and needs.
  • Assists with the analysis of department-wide data to determine gaps in service and makes recommendations to address gaps.
  • Assesses current programs and events for responsiveness and inclusivity and collaborates with department staff to design and deliver culturally responsive programs and events that reflect community interests and remove barriers to participation.
  • Supports department staff and supervises part-time staff and volunteers in planning and delivering outreach efforts, pop-up events, and community resource fairs, including participation in tabling and on-site engagement at community events as assigned.
  • Assists in identifying staff training needs related to cultural competency, inclusion, and engagement, and facilitates annual presentations sharing community feedback and emerging trends with department staff to inform programs and services.
  • Works with the departments Marketing team to ensure marketing materials, social media, and public messaging are inclusive, accessible, and representative of the citys diversity.
  • Assists the Recreation Manager with department accreditation (CAPRA) efforts related to outreach and engagement.
  • Assists with department activities as needed.
  • Serves on various community or department committees as required and / or assigned.
  • Actively supports the MPS Five Priorities for Success.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
