The Sand | Apprentice is an entry-level role designed to support the Sand and Divest team in the making and processing of sand molds for art castings. Working under the close supervision of Sand | Team Lead as well as the team’s Experts and Artisans, the apprentice assists with pattern prep, mold making, shop maintenance and organization tasks. This position provides the opportunity to develop technical skills, craftsmanship, and an understanding of sand-casting techniques essential to the art foundry process.
Key responsibilities
Assist in basic sand molding tasks such as flask making, pattern handling and preparation and mold construction.Learn sand molding for art casting techniques under direct supervision.Support sand molding staff in mold construction for casting in various alloys.Handle tools, equipment, and materials safely and responsibly.Perform cleaning, organization, and maintenance of sand molding work areas and tools.Follow detailed instructions and maintain attention to accuracy and craftsmanship.Participate actively in training opportunities to develop technical sand molding skills.Assist with pattern handling and sand molding to make safe and successful castings.Uphold safety standards and proper protective equipment use at all times.Perform additional duties as assigned to support the sand molding, cast and divest teams. High school diploma or equivalent; prior exposure to sculpture, metalwork, or fine arts is a plus.Strong interest in developing sand molding, casting and divest skills within an art foundry setting.Ability to follow instructions, learn new techniques, and apply feedback.Familiarity with basic hand tools and power tools.Willingness to perform physically demanding tasks including lifting, carpentry, and repetitive handwork.Commitment to safety. Strong teamwork, communication, and problem solving skills with an ability to work under pressure.An appreciation for the art world would serve you well in this position. Physical Requirements
Industrial workshop environment with exposure to fumes, dust, and chemicals.Must be able to wear a respirator and other required personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods, including respirators, gloves, and protective gear.Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, reach, and crouch for extended periods of time.Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds regularly.Frequent use of hands and arms for use of handling tools and materials.Must have good hand–eye coordination and manual dexterity for detailed work.Ability to work in confined spaces and maintain awkward positions for short periods.Tolerance to working in environments with strong odors, fumes, and varying temperatures (with proper protective equipment provided).Visual acuity to detect color variations, finish flaws, and surface imperfections.Hearing ability to perceive safety signals, equipment sounds, and verbal instructions.
