Job Summary

Provide mental health services, outreach programming, and case management to the students of Smith College who request or are referred for help with psychological, emotional, adjustment, and academic challenges.

Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the Colleges efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Essential Functions

Clinical Practice / Outreach (65%)

  • Provide psychotherapeutic services which include individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, consultation, and collaboration with team members (psychiatric prescribers, staff therapists, and medical providers).
  • Conduct biopsychosocial evaluations, develop treatment plans, complete treatment summaries.
  • Make referrals to private psychotherapists and / or other community resources.
  • Participate in on-call rotation to provide after-hours consultation to college staff regarding students in crisis or at risk for engaging in health threatening behaviors.
  • Serve as consultants, when permitted within the bounds of confidentiality, to various members of the college community including, but not limited to the Dean of Students, Residence Life staff, the Accessibility Resource Center, and Class Deans. Serve as regular liaisons to assigned academic departments and student organizations.
  • Provide case management for students on caseload, as well as for the broader Counseling Service (e.g., letters for students to obtain specialized services, follow up with campus and community treatment providers)
  • Engage in outreach programming throughout the year including occasional evening events or crisis response programming.

Administrative Tasks (20%)

  • Maintain appropriate and timely clinical records in the EHR including intake evaluations, progress notes, treatment plans, treatment summaries, and crisis evaluations.
  • Provide documentation for necessary services such as academic accommodations, emotional support animals, or gender-affirming medical care.
  • Participate in meetings including weekly departmental meeting, group case consultations, clinical supervision with the Director of Counseling, monthly Schacht Center meetings, seminars on topics pertinent to college mental health, and monthly Student Affairs division meetings.
  • Supervision (10%)

  • Provide clinical supervision and oversight of interns. Complete evaluations and meetings with practicum faculty advisors in accordance with guidelines established by interns graduate programs. During semesters when no intern is assigned, this time is reallocated to direct clinical care.
  • Other duties assigned by the Director of Counseling Services (5%)

  • Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

    Must hold a graduate degree (masters or doctorate) in clinical social work, counseling psychology, or a related field and be licensed as an independent practitioner. In the absence of an independent license, candidates will be considered provided they have an established timeline for securing independent licensure and have a minimum of 1 year of clinical practice experience.

    Must have a demonstrated capacity to work with a range of student populations from diverse backgrounds in alignment with the principles of cultural humility and sensitivity.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience working with college populations. A strong understanding of developmental and mental health challenges affecting late adolescence and young adult populations. Demonstrated knowledge, training, and / or experience with gender-affirming care. Clinical experience with complex trauma treatment, historical / intergenerational trauma, and racial trauma-responsive practices. Experience working with individuals who struggle with disordered eating and / or substance use. Versed in telehealth practices. Proven experience working with diverse constituencies. A commitment to the core values of the college, student affairs division, and the Schacht Center. Ability to foster equitable and inclusive care as evidenced by the demonstrated practice of cultural humility and and articulated sophistication in delivering mental health services to diverse student groups. Empathy and positivity in work engagement with students and colleagues. Ability to collaborate effectively with a team and a willingness to contribute to the overall wellness of the college community.

    Compensation

    In addition to a competitive benefits package, pay for this role is typically between $57,284.77 - $78,428.32 annually covering the middle half of market compensation. Actual compensation will vary based on individual qualifications.
