DESCRIPTION
Oversee daily operations and provide visionary leadership and strategic direction to the zoo, ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare, conservation, education, and visitor experience. This position plays a pivotal role in shaping the overall mission and goals of the zoo, fostering positive relationships with stakeholders, and managing financial resources. Leads with a focus on innovation, collaboration, excellence, and community engagement, while upholding the zoo's commitment to ethical and sustainable practices.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Biology, Wildlife Management, Conservation Science, or a related field is required. Master's degree is preferred.
- Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in zoo management or a related field, including experience in a leadership role is required.
- Class C Driver's License required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of animal biology, conservation principles, and zoo operations.Knowledge of AZA Accreditation standards.Knowledge of State and Federal laws applicable to zoological parks.Skill in organization and both verbal and written communication.Ability to provide excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and empower staff to achieve departmental goals and build effective teams and partnerships.Ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and build positive relationships.Ability to work independently and use initiative.Ability to think strategically with a focus on innovation and continuous improvement.MAJOR DUTIES
Develop and implement long-term strategic plans for the zoo department, including goals for animal care, conservation, visitor experience, and revenue generation.Monitors progress toward department objectives and adjusts plans as necessary.Manage the department's budget, monitor expenses, and identify opportunities for revenue generation through admissions, memberships, events, and fundraising initiatives.Responsible for animal acquisition and disposition considering mission statement, facilities, staff, and collection plan.Ensure the health, welfare, and enrichment of all animals within the zoo's collection, including the implementation of best practices in animal husbandry, nutrition, and veterinary care.Develop and oversee conservation programs, educational initiatives, and outreach efforts aimed at promoting wildlife conservation, environmental awareness, and biodiversity.Enhance the visitor experience by ensuring engaging exhibits, educational programs, and interactive experiences that educate and inspire guests of all ages.Provides leadership and direction to zoo staff, including hiring, training, and performance management, and foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation.Cultivate positive relationships with the local community, stakeholders, government agencies, and partner organizations, and represent the department in public forums and media appearances.Develops and maintains an effective relationship with support organization to promote community support and involvement with the zoo and its activities.Ensure the maintenance, safety, and cleanliness of zoo facilities, exhibits, and infrastructure, and oversee capital improvement projects to enhance visitor experience and animal welfare.Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and accreditation standards governing zoo operations, animal care, and public safety.Other duties as assigned.This position is an essential service position and will require providing services during emergency situations.
