Job description

Chief Operating Officer (COO)

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for overseeing day-to-day operational functions across the healthcare system to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care, operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and regulatory compliance.

The COO reports directly to the President / Chief Transformation Officer, but partners closely with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, and other senior leaders to implement strategic initiatives, drive organizational performance, and foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability. Responsibilities include the acute care, ambulatory care, and long-term care services and facilities of One Brooklyn Health (OBH).

Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Oversee daily operations across clinical and non-clinical departments, ensuring seamless, patient-focused service delivery.
  • Lead hospital operations, including patient access, ancillary services (radiology, pharmacy, laboratory, etc.), support services (EVS, transport, food, linen), and other functional areas.
  • Optimize use of resources, staffing, and technology to achieve efficiency and cost-effectiveness while maintaining quality standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, accreditation requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Drive system integration across campuses, aligning services, workflows, and resources to eliminate silos and enhance quality and consistency of care.

Strategic Planning & Execution

  • Collaborate with the President / CTO and executive team to develop and execute strategic goals and initiatives.
  • Translate organizational vision into operational objectives and measurable outcomes.
  • Drive performance improvement initiatives to enhance patient satisfaction, safety, and improve clinical outcomes.
  • Leadership & Culture

  • Build, mentor, and retain a high-performing team of operational leaders.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, respect, excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion across all operational practices.
  • Financial & Business Management

  • Partner with the Chief Financial Officer to monitor budgets, financial performance, and operational efficiency.
  • Identify opportunities for revenue enhancement, cost control, and operational growth.
  • Support business development, physician partnerships, and community engagement strategies.
  • Innovation & Change Management

  • Lead initiatives to improve care delivery including but not limited to through technology, automation, and process redesign.
  • Guide the organization through change management, ensuring staff engagement and adoption of new systems or workflows.
  • Stay current with healthcare trends, regulations, and best practices to position the organization for long-term success.
  • Qualifications

    Education :

  • Masters degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • Experience :

  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare operations required, with at least ten (10) years in a senior executive role.
  • Clinical background (MD, RN, etc.) preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Demonstrated success in hospital or health system operations, performance improvement, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong financial acumen, with proven experience managing budgets and driving cost efficiencies.
  • Proven ability for system integration.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven, and complex healthcare environment.
  • Strategic Leadership : Ability to align operations with organizational goals.
  • Operational Excellence : Expertise in process improvement and resource management.
  • Change Agent : Skilled in leading transformation in a dynamic healthcare landscape.
  • Collaborative Leadership : Builds trust and fosters teamwork across diverse stakeholders.
  • Patient-Centered Focus : Prioritizes patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction.
  • License, Certification :

  • Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (F.A.C.H.E.) certification preferred.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
