Facilities Maintenance Worker
This position, which, under the supervision of the Facilities Supervisor, performs building maintenance, repair and improvement tasks as required providing a clean, safe, and functional environment for all city patrons and employees. Scheduled hours are 7 : 00 a.m. 3 : 30 p.m. Thursday - Monday. This is a union-represented position.

Minimum qualifications must be at least 18 years of age. Education : High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required. Experience : Three years paid work experience involving the maintenance and operation of public and / or private commercial facilities. Two years paid work experience involving the maintenance and operation of a public or private commercial aquatics facility.
Special requirements : Must have a valid Washington State driver's license (or be able to attain at time of appointment) and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier. Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act. First Aid / CPR certification required within twelve months from date of hire.
Knowledge of, or ability to learn : Use of variety of hand and power tools. Electrical, lighting, HVAC, and mechanical maintenance techniques. Plumbing, and drainage maintenance techniques and design. Carpentry, painting, and janitorial techniques. Aquatic, pool, and spa maintenance techniques. Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other City employees, public officials, government agency representatives, and the public. Communicating effectively verbally and in writing. Using office equipment such as telephones, copiers, calculators and fax machines. Organizing work, setting priorities and exercising sound judgment within established guidelines. Maintaining required records and preparing necessary reports and other written materials. Interactions with a diverse range of customers and individuals including ages and abilities; potential for dissatisfied or abusive behavior and confrontations from public. The environment is sometimes stressful, working under tight deadlines, with distractions and interruptions, and requires the ability to shift priorities rapidly.
Ability to : Use initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines. Learn new principles, practices and methods as new information becomes available. Utilize PC-based software, including but not limited to, Windows operating systems, spreadsheets, databases and other software to produce plans and reports. Understand and communicate technical data. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing, in person via radio and telephone, and across distances. Establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship in a team environment with supervisors and staff. Be aware of changing surroundings. Maintain clear, concise and accurate records and report on items that need attention. Operate / drive standard size pickups and / or sedans with standard shifts outfitted with job tools to various job sites throughout the community throughout the workday. Stand, climb, walk, lift, kneel, bend, pull and / or push, grasp, hold, throw materials, reach, stoop and crouch, sit, type, read, climb ladders, write, determine color, speak and listen for extended periods. Lift and move objects a minimum of 50 pounds. Work independently, highly detail oriented and highly productive. Communicate verbally and in writing, in person via radio and telephone, and across distances. Demonstrate knowledge of maintenance and repair of physical plant mechanical systems, including heating and ventilation systems, pneumatic controls, electrical controls, boilers, pumps and piping systems, motors and motor controls. Demonstrate knowledge of applied mathematics. Demonstrate knowledge of typical construction methods and procedures. Demonstrate knowledge of building, electrical and plumbing codes. Demonstrate knowledge of products, materials, equipment and tools related to the industry. Demonstrate knowledge of swimming pool operation and water sanitation methods, including the disinfecting of swimming pool facilities, water chemistry, filtering and backwashing. Read and interpret blueprints. Evaluate and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical problems. Demonstrate skills in mechanical operations. Consistently demonstrate and actively support the identified values of the City' Core Values.

Working conditions and physical requirements include working in extreme weather conditions including ice, snow, rain, and sun, heat, humidity, small spaces, heights. Employees are exposed to vibrations, loud noises, offensive smells, dust, dirt, mud, and water. Moderate exposure chemical irritants produced by solvents, chemicals used to operate pool and aquatic facilities, clean restrooms and graffiti, fertilizers, herbicides, etc. Field duties involve walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color differentiation, and the ability to adjust focus.
Supervision is provided by the Facilities Supervisor or their designee. May also receive direction from Maintenance Worker II's. Supervision exercised : None.
Compensation : 2025 hourly salary range : $29.60 - $36.38. The full pay range for this position is posted for transparency purposes. New hire's compensation is placed between the start and midpoint of the range, based on qualifications, skills and experience. This approach ensures internal equity, as well as room for growth and progression within the pay band over time.
