Under the general guidance of the HPC Core Facility Director, and working in parallel with
the Lead Administrator, the Lead Architect plans and manages the equipment, facilities,
and software for all services supported by the UC Davis High Performance Computing at
UC Davis (HPC@UCD) Participate in and direct staff in administering HPC services
including cluster operations, virtualization, data storage, data backup, case management,
and server housing. Responsible for the security of HPC computer systems, both physical
and network security. Responsible for emergency planning and disaster recovery for all
HPC facility computer systems, and allocation of server and storage space.

Department Overview
The HPC Core Facility computing infrastructure supports the diverse needs of over 2,500
researchers in the six UC Davis colleges and schools, totaling some 48,000 CPUs, over 200
GPU nodes, and dozens of petabytes in user data storage. Each serviced unit has
extensive and varied technical computing research requirements, encompassing High
Performance Computing, large data storage systems, robotics, instrumentation, big data
acquisition, graphics, code development, security, and other specialty systems. There is a
diverse set of infrastructures to support general needs such as web services, firewalls,
virtual machines, cloud computing, file / SAN and backup service, custom applications,
business intelligence tools, and user account management. This position will serve as the
Lead Architect of the HPC Core Facility, working in parallel with the Lead Administrator
(SYS ADM 5) to guide the efforts of two more junior architects (IT ARCH 3) and four
system administrators (SYS ADM 2) in designing, installing, maintaining, and operating the
various HPC clusters on campus.
