Parking Enforcement Officer
Under general supervision, is responsible for work involving enforcement of parking regulations in designated areas. Operates a bicycle on downtown streets and City vehicles within the City of San Antonio area. May be required to work on weekends. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff. Work Location St. Mary's Garage - 400 N. St Mary's St, San Antonio, TX Work Hours Hours will vary depending on department needs to include, Weekends, Holidays, and Shiftwork.
Enforces the various City ordinances and laws pertaining to parking and issues citations to vehicles in violation.
Immobilizes vehicles that have outstanding parking tickets. Installs wheel-locking devices, which involves lifting up to 50 pounds.
Impounds vehicles parked illegally and / or creating a traffic hazard.
Prepares seizure notices that accompany the booting of vehicles.
Restricts parking in metered and signed areas as required by Police Department Traffic Division.
Prepares reports regarding boots, tows, and citations issued.
Communicates information to the public, including private and professional citizens, concerning the legal parking of vehicles.
Communicates with the supervisor, parking dispatcher, and Municipal Courts, using a two-way radio system and issued City phones.
Clears vehicles in traffic lanes that congest or slow the flow of traffic.
Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
Six (6) months of experience in a position requiring public contact.
Must successfully complete a Parking Enforcement training program conducted by the department.
Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.
Ability to work in a stressful environment.
Ability to de-escalate difficult conversations and situations.
Previous experience in parking, military, police, or enforcement positions.
Knowledge of City codes, ordinances, and state laws related to parking of vehicles on public streets and properties.
Knowledge of City streets and highways.
Knowledge of traffic safety rules and safety rules related to the operation of two-wheeled bicycles.
Knowledge of department rules and regulations.
Skill in operation of a bicycle.
Skill in operating a police radio.
Skill in utilizing a boot-wheel locking device.
Ability to interpret City ordinances, codes, and state laws related to parking of vehicles on public streets and properties.
Ability to walk or ride a bicycle for an extended period of time.
Ability to exercise good judgement and tact in tenuous situations.
Ability to maintain a keen awareness of chronic violations.
Ability to address Right of Way issues and situations to include vehicles and other modes of transportation to include electrical vehicles and include scooters.
Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
Working conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust, damp / wet surfaces, and high noise levels.
