The George W. Bush Presidential Museum promotes a greater understanding of the American presidency and examines the consequential times during which President and Mrs. Bush served. The museum offers a moving exhibit on September 11, 2001, a replica Oval Office, and an interactive experience in presidential decision-making. The museum is also host to a variety of special exhibitions that delve deeply into unique topics and provide insights that only a presidential center can offer. Housed within the George W. Essential Responsibilities
The Ken Hersh Family Director of the George W. Bush Presidential Museum will be an energetic, curious, and inspirational leader with a roll-up your sleeves approach. The Director is a critical member of the Bush Center team focused ensuring the Bush Center's mission, values, and goals are achieved though the work of the Bush Museum. The Director is responsible for museum operations, including exhibitions, collections, educational programs, guest experience, and museum staff and volunteer development and management.
Specific responsibilities include but may not be limited to :
General
- Develop and implement a dynamic vision that reflects the Bush Center's mission and the museum's role in the community.
- Position the museum as a leading cultural and civic institution at regional, national, and international levels.
- Lead strategic planning, in collaboration with other Bush Center leaders, to align exhibitions, collections, programs, and operations.
- Support the development and presentation of compelling exhibitions and programs.
- Serve as a spokesperson representing the Bush Museum and the broader Bush Center to external audiences in collaborations with the Communications Team.
- Manage the museum's activities in a fiscally balanced manner ensuring revenue and expenses are aligned with organizational priorities.
Exhibitions
Leverage both the permanent exhibit and special exhibits to create exciting "wow" moments for guests and to use museum content to surprise to guests in unexpected ways.Working with the Curator, Exhibitions and Collections, ensure the operations of the permanent exhibit in The Boeing Company Exhibition Gallery on the 43rd Presidency of the United States of America including overseeing the care for over 500 loaned objects from the National Archives and Records Collection.Working with the Curator, Exhibitions and Collections, oversee the continuation of a three-year special exhibit planning cycle, engaging with a cross functional team to program the Bradford M. Freeman Special Exhibition Gallery with the goal of attracting new members, donors, and other diverse audiences to the museum.Working with the Facility operations team, ensure maintenance issues (including of audio / visual systems) are addressed promptly and with the upmost care for any objects in proximity to such maintenance.Education Programs
Working with the Manager, Museum Education ensure robust engagement with educators by promoting the American ideals embodied in the Bush Museum, expanding the museum's influence, establishing the Bush Museum as a leader in history- and civics-focused education, and ensuring teachers are prepared to inspire future generations.Guest Services
Working with the Manager, Guest Services / Volunteer Services, ensure the Guest Service team delivers an engaging and thoughtful experience to every museum guest.Volunteers
Working with the Manager, Guest Services / Volunteer Services, ensure the team of over 200 volunteers are trained, equipped, and supported to deliver a world class experience to every museum guest.Collections Stewardship
Working with the Curator, Exhibitions and Collections, oversee the care, conservation, documentation, and interpretation of the Bush Center's permanent and loaned collections.The Director will collaborate closely with other Bush Center leaders to help inform :
Marketing and Promotion
Collaborate with the Director, Communications and Marketing, who is responsible for the Bush Center's overarching marketing and promotion plans, to drive attendance, advance membership, broaden audiences, and enhance overall community engagement.Help create meaningful opportunities to leverage the museum, an important civic institution, as a gathering place for the community.Membership Acquisition
Collaborate with the Director, Communications and Marketing, who is responsible for the membership outreach and sales program, to assist in expanding the Bush Center's membership base.Public Programming
Collaborate with the Director, Strategic Programming and Events, who is responsible for the Bush Center's public programming, to ideate dynamic programming ideas for the Bush Center's signature public programming series - Engage at the Bush Center, presented by NexPoint.Create meaningful opportunities to leverage the museum, an important civic institution, as a gathering place for the community.Other
Lead a team of five professionals including Curator, Exhibitions and Collections; Manager, Museum Education; Manager, Guest Services / Volunteer Services; and two Guest Service Supervisors with support from a shared administrative resource.Participate in fundraising meetings and activities as requested by the Development Team.Welcome and engage with distinguished visitors to the museum as warranted.Complete other tasks and duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The qualified candidate will possess (a / an) :
Bachelor's or Master's degree in history, museum studies, history, or a related field.5-10 years of experience in museum leadership / administrationKnowledge of best practices for collections management and exhibit designExperience managing a diverse team and working collaboratively with other cross functional team members to deliver results.Excellent planning, organization, project management, and administrative skills.Knowledge of and experience managing a P&L, budget, and forecasting.Strong team management experience, leadership skills, and ability to create and communicate a cohesive vision.Excellent interpersonal, public speaking, and presentation skills.Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite; Shopify experience preferred.Commitment to the mission and vision of the George W.
