Department Summary

The Department of Culture and Communication at Cal Poly Maritime Academy is seeking applications from a diverse group of qualified individuals for a part-time lecturer pool on our Vallejo campus. The department is seeking experienced, well-organized, and student-centered individuals to teach in any of our concentrations : Literature / cultural studies; Developmental and Expository Writing (College Composition), Advanced Writing (GWR / GWAR), Speech / oral communication, and Critical Thinking. All classes are taught in-person on our Vallejo campus.

Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. in hand at the start of the appointment. Those with relevant MA degrees or current grad students who are ABD will be considered. Degrees in English, Comparative Literature, Rhetoric and Composition, or a closely related discipline are acceptable. Preference will be given to candidates who have prior teaching experience at the college or university level and who can furnish evidence of strong teaching. Candidates should demonstrate their ability to interact and work effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students, including first-generation college students. Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.

This is a pool of part-time lecturers for the department to draw on as necessary and all appointments are temporary. Staffing decisions are made on a rolling basis typically beginning a few months prior to the start of an academic term right up to the beginning of the academic term. We recommend submitting your application at least 4 months before the beginning of an academic term to be considered for available positions .

Located on a compact but scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California (30 miles northeast of San Francisco), Cal Poly Maritime Academy is a unique and specialized campus of the 23-campus system. Serving a population of approximately 1000 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, we are one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States — and the only one on the West Coast. Major Duties and Responsibilities

This is a temporary position in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses including Expository Writing, Advanced Writing (GWR / GWAR), Critical Thinking, Speech, or Literature.

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of disciplines.

Minimum / Required Qualifications

An earned Ph.D. degree in English, Comparative Literature, Rhetoric and Composition, or a closely related field is required. Master’s degree, MFA, or ABD status in relevant discipline may be acceptable depending on the position. We strongly encourage members of underrepresented groups to apply.

Special Conditions

The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with Cal Poly Maritime Academy. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may result in the withdrawal of the offer of employment. Note : Cal Poly Maritime Academy cannot deny an applicant a position solely or in part due to a criminal conviction history until it has performed an individualized assessment and linked the relevant conviction history with specific job duties in the position being sought.

Salary and Benefits

SALARY COMPENSATION : Salary is commensurate with the education, qualifications, and experience of the individual. A full-time unit load for a lecturer is 15 teaching units, also called WTUs.

  • Salary schedule information for the Lecturer - Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges :

Lecturer A (Range 2) - $5,507 – $6,677

Lecturer B (Range 3) - $6,221 – $13,224

  • The anticipated hiring range is commensurate with the education and experience of the selected individual. The anticipated hiring range for full time will be between $5,676 - $6,300 per month, prorated based on unit load (WTUs).

    Integration : The California State University Board of Trustees has approved the integration of the California State University Maritime Academy with California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, effective July 1, 2025. The two campuses will form one academic institution operated as California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and all employment positions with California State University Maritime Academy are subject to this transition. Employees hired in the period after the Trustees’ approval on November 21, 2024 and prior to the integration date on July 1, 2025 will have their employment transitioned to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Employment shall continue to be subject to California State University policies and applicable collective bargaining agreements. Any changes in organizational structure, reporting relationships, or employment conditions will be communicated as details are finalized.
