Behavioral Health Care Technician

The Julian F. Keith Alcohol & Drug Abuse Treatment Center (JFK) in Black Mountain has an excellent opportunity for a Behavioral Health Care Technician (BHCT). Recruitment Range : $31,200 - $38,688

The primary responsibility of the Behavioral Health Care Technician (BHCT) is to provide support to the clients in working toward the goals and objectives of their treatment plans and to manage the milieu on each unit. This will be provided through their assistance to clients and the treatment team in the areas of fostering a therapeutic environment on the unit, helping clients in activities of daily living skills, helping the treatment team to monitor any medical, emotional, behavioral, or social problems, and supporting the clients in their efforts to overcome these problems. It is the responsibility of the BHCT to accompany and / or transport patients in need of medical services outside the facility. The BHCT manages the milieu of the unit by close observation and interaction with all patients. Although the BHCT may be assigned to a specific unit or shift, the BHCT is expected to provide coverage in any area as needed to provide a full range of services.

To be considered for employment the applicant must be in good standing with the NC Health Care Personnel Registry. Employee will be required to successfully complete training through our Staff Development department which includes but is not limited to CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention), CPR, Motivation Interviewing, Patient Monitoring, Infection Control and Body Mechanics. The BHCT I position requires frequent standing and walking.

This posting is for multiple vacancies. The Behavioral Health Care Technician will work one of the following schedules :

  • 12-hour day shift (6 : 45 am - 7 : 15 pm) some holidays, weekends and overtime; flexibility required
  • 12-hour night shift (6 : 45 pm - 7 : 15 am) some holidays, weekends and overtime; flexibility required

This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies :

Qualified candidates must document on the application that they possess all of the following :

  • Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, effectively with clients and staff.
  • Ability to document and share observations and recommendations effectively in written and verbal form.
  • Ability to follow daily instruction regarding personal care and treatment plans and daily work assignments as assigned by the Charge Nurse / Nurse Supervisor.
  • Ability to comply with nursing department policies and procedures
  • Ability to identify potential emotional, medical, or safety concerns.
  • Physical Requirements : Frequent walking, standing, and lifting are required. Ability to complete and maintain CPR Certification. Ability to complete and maintain Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification

    Management Preferences : Prefers applicants who have worked with individuals with substance use disorders or mental health conditions.

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements : High school or General Educational Development diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    About the facility : JFK is a 68-bed inpatient treatment facility designed to meet the needs of adults with substance use disorders from the 37 westernmost counties in North Carolina. The facility treats individuals with substance abuse and psychiatric diagnoses. JFK is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations as a Behavioral Health facility and certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as an inpatient psychiatric hospital.
