Job Title : Senior Automation Engineer Molding Operations

Location : Libertyville, IL

Duration : 12 months

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Automation Engineer to support and enhance molding operations through advanced automation. This role focuses on robotics, EOAT, vision systems, conveyors, PLCs, and automated part-handling systems-ensuring consistent quality, reduced manual intervention, and improved productivity across molding lines.

Key Responsibilities

Automation Design & Integration

  • Design and implement automation solutions for injection, blow, or compression molding.
  • Program, install, and troubleshoot robotic systems (ABB, Fanuc, Yushin, Wittmann, Sepro, etc.).
  • Develop and optimize EOAT, fixtures, conveyors, and automated assembly stations.
  • Collaborate with tooling and molding teams to ensure automation alignment with new mold designs.

Process Optimization

  • Improve cycle times, reduce scrap, and increase throughput through automation tuning.
  • Analyze machine / robot performance data to identify bottlenecks and drive improvements.
  • Implement poka-yoke (error-proofing) systems to support zero-defect production.
  • Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Troubleshoot automation equipment, robots, sensors, PLCs, and controllers.
  • Execute preventive and predictive maintenance for automation systems.
  • Partner with maintenance teams for advanced diagnostics and repair planning.
  • Quality & Documentation

  • Ensure automated systems meet quality and safety standards.
  • Create SOPs, programming documents, maintenance instructions, and training materials.
  • Support validation activities during mold trials and production launches.
  • Cross-Functional Support

  • Work with Molding, Tooling, Quality, Maintenance, and Engineering teams for NPI.
  • Train technicians and operators on automation systems and safety protocols.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Automation, or related field.
  • 10 15+ years of experience in molding automation (injection molding preferred).
  • Prior experience working with medical products is highly preferred.
  • Strong skills in robot programming, PLC troubleshooting, and controls integration.
  • Hands-on experience with Fanuc, ABB, Yushin, Wittmann, Sepro, or similar robotic systems.
  • Solid understanding of molding processes, mold functions, and part-handling automation.
  • Knowledge of sensors, pneumatics, PLCs, HMIs, servo systems, and vision systems.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and technical schematics.
