Role Overview
The VA North Texas Health Care System is seeking a full‑time Medical Ophthalmologist to join the Ft. Worth VA Clinic, providing primary clinical and minor surgical ophthalmic care. The position offers a Recruitment / Relocation Incentive and eligibility for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).
Key Responsibilities
- Examine patients and diagnose general ophthalmic conditions.
- Perform primary eye and vision care services including prescribing lenses and ordering diagnostic imaging.
- Provide emergency eye care and preventive screenings (diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma).
- Conduct a wide range of ophthalmic procedures : visual acuity measurement, pupillary testing, color vision testing, extraocular muscle evaluation, refractive testing, external and biomicroscopic examinations, gonioscopy, fundus evaluation, intra‑ocular pressure measurement, perimetry, and ophthalmoscopy.
- Develop and implement treatment plans and educate patients and families.
- Supervised by the Chief of Ophthalmology at Dallas VA Medical Center; meet quality and productivity metrics (minimum 16 complete exams per day).
- Work schedule Monday‑Friday 8 : 00 a.m.–4 : 30 p.m.
Qualifications
United States citizenship or admissible status for non‑citizens.Doctor of Medicine or equivalent, completed at a VA‑approved school.Current, full and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.Completed residency in Ophthalmology approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (ACGME / AOA accredited or a U.S. residency followed by five years of U.S. practice). Resident and PRP designations are accepted per VA policy.Board certification in Ophthalmology (preferred).Experience supervising ophthalmology residents and working in a leadership role.Proficient in spoken and written English as required by federal regulations.Physical ability to lift 15‑44 pounds, light carry, push, reach, and stand for required duration.Benefits & Compensation
Base salary : $220,000–$300,000 per year.
Recruitment Incentive : Sign‑on bonus authorized, plus Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment) availability.
Paid time off : 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 Federal holidays, 5 days CME).
Retirement : Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution.
