Overview
The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years. NYPL’s neighborhood libraries in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island are being transformed into centers of educational innovation and service. NYPL is seeking a Junior Library Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for library users and employees.
Location & Compensation
Location : Wakefield Library
Compensation : $44,904 / year
Responsibilities
- Cleans and maintains the library building and grounds
- Buffs, strips, and waxes floors
- Shampoos carpets
- Replaces light bulbs
- Handles snow removal
- Prepares maintenance reports and maintains inventory of bathroom and cleaning supplies
- Takes necessary action to safeguard the building during an emergency and escalates issues to appropriate personnel
- Communicates with Library Manager on a regular basis to determine branch needs
- Travels between branches within the assigned network
- May be assigned to two sites and to work at other locations as needed
Required Education, Experience & Skills
High School Diploma or GED and prior basic custodial / building superintendent workValid driver’s license and clear driving recordRequired Experience
Prior basic custodial / building superintendent workExperience with standard practices, materials, and equipment used in commercial building cleaningRequired Skills
Knowledge of material safety data sheets, safety practices and proceduresGood interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skillsDemonstrated flexibility and reliabilityAbility to perform manual work including cleaning, heavy lifting, snow removal; work from high ladders, scaffolds, and electrical liftsHeavy lifting may be requiredPerforms related duties as requiredMust pass physical examWork Environment & Physical Demands
