GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Surgical Scheduler utilizes clinical knowledge and strong organizational skills to accurately schedule office-based and hospital procedures in accordance with provider orders and patient diagnoses. This position requires attention to detail, professionalism, and excellent customer service when interacting with patients, staff, and external partners. The scheduler must manage a high-volume workload while maintaining accuracy and responding promptly to scheduling changes or inquiries.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Schedule office and hospital-based medical procedures with the appropriate provider, date, time and location using the correct scheduling codes.
- Communicate effectively with hospital staff to maintain strong working relationships and seamless patient care coordination.
- Coordinate with vendors to ensure necessary equipment is available for all procedures.
- Enter detailed scheduling notes and special instructions into the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Apply clinical understanding to ensure scheduled procedures align with provider orders and patient diagnoses.
- Obtain and document informed consent for procedures and surgeries as required.
- Provide patients with clear, accurate pre-procedure instructions, including preparation and facility information, address patient questions promptly.
- Verify that the patient's insurance is accepted at the scheduled facility.
- Ensure required medical, cardiac and pulmonary clearances are obtained prior to surgery.
- Assist other team members as needed to support departmental workflow.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent required.Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in healthcare scheduling or related field.Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) systems preferred.Strong attention to detail and professional conduct at all times.Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with demonstrated critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and a positive attitude.CMU is an AA / EO institution, providing equal opportunity to all persons, including minorities, females, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
