JOB SUMMARY
Plans layout and wiring of electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment. Installs, repairs and modifies new or existing equipment and systems to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.
Typical Duties
- Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or
blueprints, insuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings
and flooring.
Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit, using such tools ashacksaw, pipe threader, and conduit bender. Pulls wiring through conduit. Splices wires by
stripping insulation from terminal leads with knife or pliers, twisting or soldering wires together,
and applying tape or terminal caps. Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment,
using hand-tools.
Installs control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels,fastening in place with screws or bolts, using hand tools and power tools.
Connects power cables to equipment, such as safety switches or motor, and installs groundingleads. Tests continuity of circuit to insure electrical compatibility and safety of components,
using testing instruments, such as ohmmeter, ampmeter, and voltmeter.
Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need foradjustments, relocation, or replacement.
Repairs faulty equipment or systems as needed.Maintains work log records. Requisitions parts, materials and equipment as needed andaccording to specifications. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or GED equivalent ( must provide proof at time of interview)Successful completion from an approved and recognized apprenticeship program or equivalent pursuant to attaining Journeyman status as an Electrician (must provide proof at time of interview)KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Thorough and extensive knowledge of the principles, methods, and technologies relative to electrical construction, installation and repairKnowledge of city, state and local building codes as they relate to electrical constructionSkill in installing, operating, testing, dismantling and repairing all types of electrical equipment used in building constructionSkill in identifying electrical problems, and repairing and maintaining motors, lighting, power, control, fire alarm, high voltage, U.P.S. systems and low voltage systemsSkill in interpreting blueprints and computing distances. Proficiency in interpreting and following blueprints, electrical diagrams and local electrical codesSkill in the installation of all conduit systems, wiring, electrical devices, lighting fixtures, motors, switches, panels, motor control centers and switchboardsThis position may require moderate to extensive travel to work assignments throughout Cook County, for which the employee must provide his or her own adequate means of transportationMUST MEET ALL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AT TIME OF APPLICATION FILING.
Degrees awarded outside of the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States' territories and Canada must be credentialed by an approved U.S. credential evaluation service belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE). Original credentialing documents must be presented at time of interview.
