JOB SUMMARY
The Police Sergeant performs a variety of duties to ensure that the university campus is a safe environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors, including, but not limited to, scheduling, monitoring, inspecting, and coordinating the work activities of police officers.
DUTIES
- Supervises patrol and security officers on duty; acts as the watch commander for a shift; mentors subordinates
- Enforces state and federal laws and university policies; enforces traffic laws, conducts traffic stops, and issues citations and violations as appropriate; assists officers with queries as required
- Reviews Police Reports and makes any necessary corrections
- Assists with patrol functions, conducting property checks, enforcing traffic laws, and answering calls for service
- Provides continuous training for police officers, security officers, and dispatchers as required by TCOLE, including maintaining appropriate records and files; locates required classes as necessary; maintains the UHD Police Training website and calendar
- Revises and oversees the Field Training Program, ensuring that recruits are suitably trained
- Recommends policy and procedure changes as necessary
- Responds to emergency calls; assist students, faculty, and staff with questions and problems they may have
- Acts as the incident commander for any major incidents until a superior officer arrives to take over the Incident Command Center
- Attends meetings as required; completes all necessary paperwork, including, but not limited to, schedules, evaluations, timesheets, daily paperwork, and responding to emails
