Description :

The SICU population consists of trauma patients, CV surgery patients, neurosurgery patients, and other complicated surgical patients.

Special requirements include interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, arterial line management, and blood product administration.

Common diagnoses include acute ventilator need, COVID+ with high O2 demand, DKA, severe sepsis, unstable GI bleed, trauma cases, open heart recovery, TAVR recovery, post-code blue, and multi-system organ failure.

The staffing ratio is 1 : 2-3; if floating to step down, it can be 1 : 3-4.

Clinicians may float within the scope to meet facility needs.

Every other weekend shift is required.

The patient care unit has 38 beds.

Interdisciplinary support includes physical therapy, respiratory services, interpretation services, phlebotomy, radiology, social services, rapid response teams, pharmacy, and transportation.

Special procedures include conscious sedation at the bedside, in-room EGDs, chest tube insertions, and bronchoscopies.

The unit accommodates various equipment such as Swan catheters, internal temperature management devices, ICU specialty beds, balloon pumps, CRRT machines, and in-room monitors.
