Job description

Overview

Assistant / Associate Professor of Behavioral Medicine / Psychology at Sam Houston State University (SHSU). The position is part of the SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM) in the Department of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine. Location : Conroe, SHSU-COM facility.

Responsibilities

  • Serve the SHSU-COM in the Department of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine as full-time Clinical Faculty.
  • Provide confidential individual and couples therapy or counseling within the SHSU Physicians Clinic, with priority to SHSU-COM students.
  • Arrange group counseling sessions tailored for SHSU-COM students and act as liaison with the Office of Medical Student Affairs to understand the unique stressors of the COM curriculum, suggesting options and policies to enhance student well-being.
  • Compile mental health resources and appropriately triage students who may be hesitant to pursue follow-up care at the clinic.
  • Provide integrated behavioral and psychological support to physicians, students, and residents in the clinic and contribute to teaching trainees.
  • Serve as an approved supervisor for doctoral therapy students from SHSU, if possible.
  • Establish rapport with the student body to ensure awareness of available services and comfort in seeking help.
  • Be available on-site for walk-in visits and informal discussions; promote a culture of wellness and support students in managing stress and preventing burnout.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Clinic Operations and the Clinic Director to obtain credentialing and empanelment with insurance companies and complete billing paperwork.
  • Support individuals and classes during especially stressful times and assist with crisis management when necessary.

Location and Department

The position reports to the Chair of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine and works closely with the Director of Medical Student Affairs and the Associate Dean for Clinical Operations. This role is located in Conroe at the College of Osteopathic Medicine facility.

Requirements

  • Degree Requirements : Terminal degree and license in Texas to provide therapy or counseling; eligible to accept assignment by third-party payers in the clinic. Degrees include PhD Psychology, PhD Marriage and Family Therapy, PsyD, PhD Counseling or PhD Counseling Psychology.
  • Experience Requirements : Clinical skills and well-developed communication skills. A background in medical education is preferred, as is experience in pre-clinical and clinical teaching. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and training.
  • Other Requirements : Ability to communicate and work with faculty, medical students, clerkship coordinators, hospital administrators, physician preceptors and college administration. Excellent written and verbal communication. Demonstrates personal initiative and ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. Familiarity with Learning Management Systems and reporting is preferred. Other duties as assigned.
