ODFJELL OPERATOR JOB DESCRIPTION (CHARLESTON)

JOB TITLE : CHARLESTON TERMINAL OPERATOR

DEPARTMENT : OPERATIONS

REPORTS TO : LEAD OPERATOR / SUPERINTENDENT

EXEMPT / NON-EXEMPT : NON-EXEMPT

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs service work relating to transferring liquids (chemicals, acids, oils etc.) between marine, rail, trucks and / or storage facilities within the terminal.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Personal Safety is the responsibility of the employee. Every employee has the “right to say NO” if it is perceived the allotted work or the workplace is unsafe for any reason.
  • Safely load and unload Rail Cars.
  • Safely load and unload Trucks.
  • Safely load and unload Vessels and Barges.
  • Trans load : Rail Car to Truck, Truck to Rail; Rail Car to Isotainer, Isotainer to Isotainer, Isotainer to Rail Car; Rail Car to Flexitainer, Flexitainer to Rail Car.
  • Direct Move : Rail Car to Vessel, Vessel to Rail Car.
  • Safely maneuver, pull, weigh and spot rail cars.
  • Safely transfer product from Tank to Tank, and Tank to and from all modes of transport.
  • Housekeeping at the place of work is a Terminal Operators responsibility.
  • The security of Odfjell’s Terminal rests with the Terminal Operators.
  • Performing of daily and weekly patrols following orderly routes and scanning of (TWIC) cards on scanners at various Terminal entry and departure points will be required.
  • Investigation of facility malfunctions observed or reported including lighting, fencing, and security.
  • As directed, perform security detail on shift basis at the Terminal entrance gate, controlling traffic, inspecting visitor’s vehicles and badges etc.
  • Accurately enter information into the Terminal Management System (TMS), Oasis or equivalent.
  • Odfjell is a ‘Procedure Driven’ Company and as such, there is a procedure that has to be followed for every task required to be completed by the Terminal Operator. Notwithstanding anything contained in this or any other document issued by the Company or any order regardless of its source, the Terminal Operator is NOT to attempt any task unless he / she is fully conversant with and follows the associated and governing procedure(s).
  • Perform regular inspections and preventative maintenance on the following equipment : storage tanks, safety showers, utility tanks, product pumps, marine crane, dock equipment, truck and rail loading stations, firewater system, utility pumps, marine vapor recovery system, and other assigned terminal equipment.
  • Perform change in service inspection on product systems when applicable in accordance with procedures.
  • Perform minor repairs and regular maintenance on moveable equipment, terminal equipment and building equipment.
  • Oversee assigned contractors and direct contractors on performing tasks related to responsibilities as required.
  • Safely operate moveable equipment to load and unload equipment and materials.
  • Perform duties in the warehouse when requested and as needed.
  • Perform other job related duties as training allows and assigned by Superintendent.
  • Perform maintenance on exterior surfaces of pipes, valves, and equipment to ensure integrity of coatings through proper preparation of surface and application of coating.
  • Safely remove equipment from service as required and replace equipment in kind complying with Lock Out & Tag Out procedures and cleaning procedures.
  • Safely operate equipment and tools as directed and designed to perform assigned duties.
  • Clean job site, ensure all equipment, tools and materials are returned to proper place.
  • Knowledgeable of safety precaution and special handling requirements of each product.
  • Trained in safety and emergency procedures.
  • Working with persons from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds.
  • Looks for opportunities to increase performance, improve efficiencies and reduce costs.
  • Follow company policies and comply with company regulations. Cooperate and support colleagues.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Trained in fire- fighting and a member of the facility ‘Emergency Response Team’.
  • In case of absence, the employee’s supervisor will assume and / or assign responsibility for this position’s duties.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Intellectual ability to learn and apply a practical knowledge of chemical products and detailed procedures.
  • Ability to read / learn to read schematic drawings, PFD’s, P&ID’s, Tank Plans etc.
  • Ability to effectively use computer tools.
  • Basic mathematical ability & observation of safety rules.
  • Basic instrument, mechanical and electrical knowledge / ability to apply.
  • Recognition of the need for continued learning.
  • Ability to accept close supervision and understand the limitations imposed to maintain an adequate margin against error.
  • PHYSICAL / MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Occasionally : sitting, balancing, lifting or carrying up to 75 pounds.

    Frequently : talking, crawling, standing, walking (general), walking in and out of terminal and through turnstile, ability to evacuate on foot in an emergency, climbing stairs to top of tanks, bending over, climbing ladders, reaching overhead, crouching, kneeling, pushing or pulling, grasping, repetitive use of hands / arms, repetitive use of legs, lifting or carrying 10-50 pounds, thinking analytically; understanding, assimilating and drawing conclusions from information and data; receiving and transmitting information accurately using oral and written communications, concentrating on tasks, making decisions, using math / calculations, using fine manipulation, keyboarding / typing, producing unique or creative solutions to problems, discriminating colors.

    Continuously : adjusting to changes, examining / observing details, remembering details, hearing, touching, using English language correctly, smelling, seeing, maintaining stamina during the work shift, maintaining attention span during the work day, using eye / hand coordination.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Occasionally : working around electrical hazards, working at heights and in confined spaces, working around hot temperature devices and vibration, maintaining composure and professionalism under emotional stress, working in difficult interpersonal situations, travel domestically.

    Frequently : working irregular hours, working on call, working in hot or cold temperatures, wearing PPE, falling hazards (wearing a safety harness), working outside, heavy machinery, sharp objects / tools; performing multiple tasks at the same time, working around exposure to fumes, gases, odors, dirt, dust, grease, oil mud, and excessive noise.

    Continuously : working on a shift schedule, working in close proximity / potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, maintaining respirator fit, maintaining a TWIC card, wearing a uniform, maintaining a high level of energy and productivity throughout the work shift.

  • Odfjell’ s Corporate Quality, Health, Safety, Environmental Policy requires that all our activities be based on zero accidents philosophy meaning that our goal is no personal injury, no pollution and no damage to product, ships, terminals or other properties and means of transportation.
  • Odfjell will provide training in order that these tasks may be safely performed by the Terminal Operator.
