The Town of Brookline is seeking an experienced, high-performing municipal professional to serve as Assistant Town Administrator for Operations. This key leadership role supports the Town Administrator in managing day-to-day functions of Town government, overseeing operations of the Select Board / Town Administrator’s Office, and ensuring exceptional responsiveness to residents, boards, and staff.
The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, high-profile environment, is an exceptional communicator and problem-solver, and brings strong supervisory and organizational skills. This position plays a critical liaison role between residents, department heads, elected officials, vendors, and external agencies — often serving as the first point of contact on complex constituent matters. This position requires attendance at evening meetings and occasional weekend hours.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a member of the Town’s executive leadership team, coordinating Town-wide initiatives, projects, and policy implementation under the direction of the Town Administrator and Select Board.
- Oversee daily operations of the Town Administrator / Select Board Office, including supervising staff, interns, and volunteers; managing workflows; and ensuring efficient administrative systems.
- Manage issuance and enforcement of permits and licenses under the Select Board’s authority.
- Coordinate Select Board meetings, including agenda preparation, meeting materials, calendars, and hybrid meeting technology.
- Lead interdepartmental coordination on constituent and operational issues; act as principal administrative contact for internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist with Town Meeting preparation, publication of Combined Reports, and follow-up actions.
- Coordinate board and commission membership processes, including applications, appointments, and records.
- Process payroll and maintain personnel and attendance records for the office; oversee purchasing and invoice processing.
- Develop, recommend, and enforce administrative policies and procedures.
- Perform special projects and related duties as assigned.
Qualifications :
Bachelor's Degree in public administration, business management or related field; five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in high profile office administration, communications or customer service; municipal and supervisory experience strongly preferred; experience working with the public is highly desired; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Demonstrated supervisory experience and ability to exercise sound judgment with discretion.Strong knowledge of municipal operations, public administration practices, and applicable laws.Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with a proven track record of delivering excellent customer service to diverse constituencies.Proficiency in office software, social media platforms, and publication tools; familiarity with web design is a plus.Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and operate with tact and diplomacy in sensitive situations.Salary and Application Deadline :
