Position Overview :
SDOT is seeking a skilled and motivated Paving Crew Chief to lead our Maintenance Operations Division (MOD). In this hands-on leadership role, you'll oversee a dedicated crew performing structural asphalt and concrete repairs across Seattle's streets, sidewalks, and curbs. You'll also play a vital role in our snow and ice response team, helping ensure safe and reliable mobility for all Seattle residentsrain, shine, or snow.

Job Responsibilities
Supervises, plans, directs, and instructs a crew of skilled craft professionals such as Construction & Maintenance Equipment Operators (CMEOs) and Maintenance Labors. Submits written plans, cost estimates, and detailed reports within set deadlines; interprets and follows written and oral instructions; understand and applies departmental policies and procedures, union contracts, OSHA, WOSHA, and departmental rules and procedures. Determines and maintains accurate daily crew reports on crew, material, and equipment needs. Inspects work site prior to scheduling to determine site readiness, locate marks, plan layouts etc. Schedules on-site pre-con meetings with asset owners to determine plan scope, limits, and impacts. Inspects worksites to ensure appropriate quality work, coordinates with other sections to ensure continuity of work progress, and ensures that work environment, tools, and equipment comply with State and Federal regulations. Coordinates paving projects with other field activities within the street right-of-way. Coordinates street repairs with utilities such as Seattle Public Utilities (SPU), Seattle City Light (SCL), and Puget Sound Energy (PSE). Trains crew members on new work procedures, safety processes, and protocols. Serves as a field subject matter expert on Best Management Practices for environmental compliance. Serve as a Lead in SDOT responses to weather emergencies such as snow and ice, landslides, and windstorms. Supports departmental goals in promoting diversity and social justice in keeping with the City's Race and Social Justice Initiative.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications : Four years of public works experience including one year of asphalt or concrete paving operations experience or equivalent in any type of construction, installation, inspection, maintenance, repair, material transportation or materials application work relating to public works, public utilities and / or public facilities. OR : An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties. Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience : One year of experience as a Sr Asphalt Raker OR one-year related experience in asphalt construction, installation, and repair. Familiarity with various computer programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Hansen Work Management) Ability to read and interpret blueprints, job layouts, and traffic control set-up plans, the City of Seattle standard plans and specifications pertaining to street paving, Right of Way Restoration Rules (ROWRR). Experience with complex scheduling of multiple projects, organizing and prioritizing skills abilities. Good written and oral communication skills. Experience working in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base. Knowledge of the in-street manual, cross slopes for sidewalks and ADA specifications and SDOT Safety Policy. Work Environment / Physical Demands : Requires standing, walking, or bending for extended periods of time. Frequently requires lifting objects in excess of 50 pounds. Occasionally requires handling or working with toxic / hazardous substances. Requires working outdoors in all types of weather around moving traffic. License, Certification, and Other Requirements : Current Washington State driver's license.
