This is a Permanent Exempt (PEX) (Category 18) position. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and incumbents are "at will" and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

The SFO Fellows Program provides recent graduates and emerging professionals with an immersive 12-month fellowship that combines meaningful project work, mentorship, and professional development at one of the nation's leading airports. Fellows receive mentoring, career development support, and networking opportunities for professional growth. Fellows are highly encouraged to continue with City employment beyond their fellowship year and will receive guidance in applying for other employment opportunities within the SFO Airport Commission.
For 20252026, SFO is offering two fellowship opportunities in the following areas :
Safety & Compliance Fellow Work alongside the Safety Management System (SMS) Team to support FAA regulatory compliance and airport-wide safety initiatives. Duties include assisting with risk assessments, hazard tracking, safety data collection, and contributing to safety campaigns. Fellows will help expand SMS implementation to more than 25,000 airport employees by July 2027, gaining valuable skills in program management, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory analysis.
Custodial Operations Services Fellow Work with SFO's Custodial Operations Services to ensure that airport facilities meet the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency for passengers, employees, and visitors. With over 25 million square feet of cleanable space across terminals, offices, and operational areas, Custodial Operations Services plays a critical role in maintaining SFO's reputation as a world-class airport.
