Radiation Safety Technologist II

In the role of a Radiation Safety Technologist II you will be working in our Research Office.

Purpose

The Office of Research helps to facilitate life-saving biomedical research at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Nine distinct units provide specialized support to meet the needs of our research investigators and staff, and together we coordinate, regulate, and monitor research studies. Our Office of Radiation Safety oversees the safe and compliant use of radioactive materials for research, education, and patient care applications.

The Radiation Safety Technologist II supports the daily operations of the Office of Radiation Safety (ORS) by working with fellow Radiation Safety staff to maintain compliance with the MCW broadscope radioactive materials license and Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) regulations for use of Radioactive Materials and other sources of ionizing radiation. The Technologist works closely with the Assistant Radiation Safety Officer to assist with the physical transportation and tracking of radioactive materials and monitoring radiation sources. The Technologist supports the oversight of authorized use, training, and handling of specific materials, as well as supporting ORS office functions and small projects as directed by the Radiation Safety Officer.

Primary Functions

• Plan, prepare, evaluate and perform audits and surveys and take corrective action for radiation contamination or exposure.
• Work with the ARSO to complete inventory of radioactive materials.
• Manage the personnel monitoring program for the research and clinical use of radioactive materials and review the exposure records for standards and compliance.
• Provide radiation safety training to lab staff in accordance with standard radiation safety practices, DHS regulations, and MCW's radioactive materials license. This training shall be periodically updated as needed.
• Manage the MCW radioactive waste program, including collecting, processing and maintaining the radioactive waste from MCW and FMLH.
• Assist with monitoring services requiring dosimetry and bioassay measurements.
• Survey patients that have been given radioactive materials and maintain records to confirm patients are discharged in accordance with DHS 157.62(8).
• Educate patients that have been given radioactive materials to reduce radiation dose to family and members of the public.
• Calibrate radiation survey meters by means of Nation Institute Standards and Technology (NIST) Standards.
• Participate in shielding evaluations in existing or newly constructed areas where ionizing radiation will be used.
• Assist with ancillary staff radiation safety training programs.
• Plan and provide materials for the quarterly Radiation Safety Committee meetings.
• Provide emergency response to incidents.
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

Must have very strong customer service skills that includes courteous and helpful behavior; accomplishing tasks through teamwork and initiative; and anticipating the needs of all those with whom you work.

Must be able to learn and understand fundamental concepts related to working with radioactive materials and radiation sources and practically apply a working knowledge to day-to-day tasks.

Must be able to work independently with direction and to foster collaborative working relationships and participate as a member of a dynamic team.

Organization, time management, interpersonal, and problem solving skills required.

Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Must be comfortable with technology and be proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Within 6 months, must be able to be approved for unescorted access to areas of increased control in accordance with 10 CFR 37.

Minimum Required Education : Bachelor's degree

Minimum Required Experience : 3 years

Preferred Experience : Experience in scientific, medical, or educational research environment preferred.
