School Psychologist Job Description
Position Summary :
A School Psychologist works in educational settings to support students' psychological, emotional, and academic well-being. They collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, and other professionals to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment that fosters students' growth and development. School psychologists assess and address a range of psychological and educational issues, including learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and mental health concerns, providing interventions, counseling, and consultation services.
Key Responsibilities :
Psychological Assessment :
Conduct comprehensive psychological assessments of students to evaluate cognitive, academic, behavioral, and emotional functioning.
- Administer and interpret standardized tests, observation, and other assessment tools to identify learning disabilities, mental health issues, and social-emotional challenges.
- Use assessment data to develop appropriate intervention plans and collaborate with educational teams to support student learning and growth.
Intervention and Counseling :
Provide individual and group counseling services to students experiencing emotional or behavioral difficulties.
Develop and implement intervention strategies for students with academic, social, or behavioral concerns.Support students in managing stress, anxiety, bullying, grief, and other emotional challenges.Promote healthy coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills in students.Consultation and Collaboration :
Work closely with teachers, administrators, and other school staff to provide guidance on creating supportive learning environments.
Provide professional development and resources to staff on topics related to mental health, student behavior, and learning strategies.Partner with parents and families to address student needs, offer resources, and create individualized plans for success.Crisis Intervention and Prevention :
Respond to crisis situations, such as students experiencing trauma, suicidal ideation, or other immediate mental health concerns.
Provide crisis intervention and support for students in acute distress, ensuring a safe and supportive school environment.Develop and implement proactive programs aimed at preventing bullying, substance abuse, and other behavioral concerns.Data Collection and Reporting :
Collect and analyze data to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and strategies.
Maintain accurate and confidential records of student assessments, interventions, and progress.Prepare reports for parents, administrators, and outside agencies as needed, adhering to confidentiality standards.Program Development and Advocacy :
Advocate for students' psychological and educational needs at the school and district levels.
Develop and implement programs that promote mental health awareness, diversity, equity, and inclusion.Support the development of individualized education plans (IEPs) and 504 plans for students with disabilities or special needs.Qualifications :
Education : Master's or Doctoral degree in School Psychology or a closely related field.Licensure / Certification : State certification or licensure as a school psychologist (requirements vary by state).Experience : Experience working with children and adolescents in a school or educational setting is preferred.Skills :Strong knowledge of psychological assessment tools and techniques.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to collaborate effectively with educators, administrators, and parents.Familiarity with educational laws, ethical guidelines, and best practices in school psychology.Ability to manage crisis situations calmly and effectively.Knowledge of mental health disorders, learning disabilities, and behavioral issues in children.Company Description
