Retail Specialist

The Retail Specialist reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Museum Store and its inventory including product sourcing, in-store marketing and merchandising, and operational controls (subject to approval). The Retail Specialist shares responsibility with the Visitor Services Supervisor for creating an inviting and welcoming experience for visitors, and plays a vital role in furthering the museums mission of advocating for bison restoration through education and outreach by extending visitors museum experience to the store. This is an hourly position requiring a regular work-week of up to 40 hours. Regular schedule includes at least one weekend day. Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to the following :

  • Monitoring inventory, reordering products according to stock on hand and volume of sales / season.
  • Receiving orders, inspecting quality of items received and following up on damages or other discrepancies.
  • Tracking and appropriate control of store inventory, making quantity adjustments, and planning and conducting an annual physical inventory at the end of the year.
  • Assisting the Controller with purchasing / billing / filing practices for adequate financial recording, record-keeping, and documentation.
  • Monitoring and regular inspection of the store to ensure the best possible presentation of items, promoting the general museum image and providing a safe, secure environment for all visitors, volunteers and staff.
  • Assist in selecting and recommending store inventory items that extend the visitor experience through access to products and materials in the museum store that celebrate our educational mission.
  • Analyzing and monitoring retail pricing for optimal profits.
  • Participating in the supervision and training of Visitor Services staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain the museums online store to include the timely packing and shipping of e-commerce orders.
  • Updating inventory and purchasing database items for new inventory and / or vendors.
  • Assisting with choosing sale items and mark-downs to help reduce inventory.
  • Conducting Museum Store sales and restocking, as staffing levels require.
  • Conducting admission sales, as staffing levels require.
  • Assemble and provide monthly open-to-buy, sales, and stock reports.
  • Maintain the Point-of-Sale (POS) system for the Store. Become proficient in the understanding and use of the POS including generating purchase orders, database maintenance, report generation, and inventory valuation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Requirement : Ability to lift 20+ lbs on occasions.
