MACHINIST; Sugar Refinery; MT

Position Overview

A leading Sugar Refinery is seeking a skilled Machinist to join the factory's machine shop at the company south central Montana location. The Machinist will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing mobile and machine equipment, ensuring the effective operation of various machinery. This position reports directly to the Maintenance Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Lead by example in safety practices, demonstrating strong safety behaviors and leadership.
  • Operate a range of machine tools to manufacture and repair mechanical assemblies.
  • Record necessary data, including measurements and illustrations, to achieve desired service or design outcomes.
  • Correctly use measuring devices to ensure proper sizing and tolerance.
  • Perform milling operations such as drilling, tapping, boring, and lathe work on various types of equipment.
  • Utilize metalizing (metal spraying) techniques as needed.
  • Conduct various welding operations, including MIG, TIG, torch, and stick welding.
  • Set up and execute tool-post grinding, broaching procedures, and babbitt bearing work.
  • Use a variety of hand-held and stationary power tools, including band saws, grinders, and files.
  • Lift, adjust, and secure heavy objects to ensure safety and proper execution of work tasks.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and wear appropriate protective gear.
  • Assist other maintenance personnel with both skilled and non-skilled tasks as needed.
  • Maintain personal machinist tools necessary for the role.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skill & Experience Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Proficiency and experience with :
  • Manual lathes, thread cutting, tapping, boring, grinding, reaming, and milling.
  • Precision measuring instruments and techniques for exact sizing and tolerance.
  • Metal spraying, radial drill operation, stick and MIG welding, oxy-acetylene welding, and torching.
  • Reading blueprints, shop drawings, and interpreting symbols.
  • Identification and use of various metals, alloys, and non-metal materials.
  • Experience operating hand tools, lathes, and mills to manufacture and repair mechanical assemblies.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Motivated, enthusiastic, and capable of making independent decisions.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Skilled in identifying and repairing broken parts and equipment.
  • Ability to stand or move for up to 12 hours, including rotating shifts and overtime as needed.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 100 lbs.
  • Ability to wear all necessary PPE.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
