GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB DUTIES
The Mechanic III performs the more complex repairs and / or leads the team's efforts to diagnose them. The work requires a broad scope and great depth of knowledge and skill in a wide variety of functions and subjects, particularly the theory of mechanical and electronic functions. This position reports to a Maintenance Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Functions as a senior mechanic / troubleshooter, particularly on rebuilding tasks and utilizing electronic and computer-controlled systems.Reviews work orders; coordinates repairs and priorities of the shift with the Maintenance Manager.Rebuilds and / or refurbishes complex mechanical and electronic systems.Fabricates parts such as frames, brackets, braces and linkages from metal. Welds and shapes as needed.Monitors complex work performed by others for accuracy, safety and efficiency as needed.Implements preventive maintenance and servicing programs. Provides input to program changes needed.Advises management of major equipment problems and discusses remedies.Recommends "campaigns" to repair or replace components in large numbers of vehicles.Develops recommendations for the budget including major parts replacement or updating systems as needed.Keeps current on the full body of information regarding all aspects (mechanical, electronic, pneumatic, HVAC and hydraulic systems) of maintaining and repairing the authority's vehicles with particular attention to complex electronic and computerized control systems.Conducts in-house training programs, as requested.Recommends procedures for the shop and communicates to the staff.Analyzes the maintenance of vehicle servicing and history records.Remains fully knowledgeable of and maintains compliance with all Safety rules and regulations.Ensures proper safety tools and equipment are used at all time and understands the requirement for reporting Safety hazards and / or violations.Other duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university.Five years related experience with three years' experience as a master mechanic on a variety of gasoline and diesel equipment; some lead mechanic experience.Must be able to report to work during Adverse Weather conditions.Must have a good driving record and have or be able to obtain a class B Commercial Driver's License with a passenger endorsement.Must be able to meet the Department of Transportation's physical requirements and maintain a valid DOT card.Strong analytical / diagnostic skills.Certification in servicing motor vehicle A / C in accordance with Section 609 of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.Certification in performing both Safety and Emission Inspections in accordance with the State of NC Division of Motor Vehicle Regulations.Proficiency in the use of mechanical tools and equipment such as steam cleaner, jumper cables, battery booster, hydraulic jack, hoist, creeper, diagnostic and repair equipment, tune-up machine, hydraulic press, vacuum pump, leak detector, electrical circuitry tester, metal machine lathe, A / C recovery machine, arbor press, forklift, welder, cutting torch, valve grinder, and various vehicles.Proficiency with computers is necessary.An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the above stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.
Working Conditions :
The primary work environment is the garage facility. Individual must be constantly aware of the hazards associated with the garage environment. Specifics of the garage environment include vehicles being moved in confined areas, pits, grease spills, fumes, high noise levels, toxic chemicals, and repair equipment being used. Individual will be exposed to toxic and non-toxic cleaning and wax stripping fluids, fuels, glues, lubricants, floor cleaning machine, large stationary bus washer, steam cleaning machines, and other normal garage equipment and tools. Physical stamina is significant; requires sustained bending and reaching positions at uncomfortable angles. The incumbent may also have to endure brief periods of lifting or carrying heavy objects, sometimes up at least one flight of stairs.
Physical Requirements :
Medium work : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
