SUMMARY

The Tax Accountant role focuses on managing specialized areas of taxation within the cannabis industry, including Sales & Use Tax, Cannabis Business Tax, and Excise Tax. Responsibilities include preparing and filing indirect tax returns, reconciling tax accounts, supporting audits, and ensuring regulatory compliance, including business licensing where required. The position requires a strong understanding of cannabis-related tax regulations and the ability to navigate a fast-paced, evolving compliance environment with accuracy and attention to detail.

We are specifically looking for someone based in the Bay Area or surrounding regions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES (the list is not all inclusive)

• Prepares, reviews, and files Sales & Use Tax, Cannabis Business Tax, and Excise Tax returns accurately and timely.
• Performs monthly tax account reconciliations, identifying and resolving discrepancies.
• Assists with state and local tax audits, including gathering documentation, responding to inquiries, and working with auditors.
• Maintains compliance with cannabis-specific tax regulations at the local, state, and federal levels.
• Monitors legislative and regulatory tax law developments affecting the cannabis industry.
• Supports business license applications and renewals, particularly those with tax implications.
• Assists with the preparation and submission of applications for Federal Employer Identification Numbers (FEINs) for newly established entities, ensuring timely and accurate compliance with IRS requirements.
• Provides support for lease accounting, fixed asset tracking, bank reconciliations, and other accounting functions as needed to ensure accurate financial reporting and operational efficiency.
• Maintains an organized and audit-ready tax files and documentation.
• Collaborates with internal departments (e.g., finance, legal, operations) to ensure proper tax treatment of transactions.
• Identifies and recommends opportunities for process improvements in the tax function.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the team and organizational goals.
