Healthcare Staffing Professionals has an immediate need for a Mental Health Consultant to support the Help Me Grow LA Program. Mental Health Consultant : provides DPH / Help Me Grow LA clients and staff with mental and behavioral health expertise and diagnostic assessment as it pertains to early childhood development practices. The Mental Health Consultant (MHC) position is designed to integrate with the HMG LA care team for clients and will work with a team of Family Partners that provide information, referrals, training and support to parents facing a variety of challenges finding resources that could be helpful to their child, identifies parents for the Parent-to-Parent (P2P) program and that promote the development of emerging parent advocates and leaders. Another key aspect of the position will be to coordinate with the Department of Mental Health to assess current referral pathways between DPH and DMH and to make recommendations for improvement and sustainability.

Position will start upon acceptance and employment clearance and is initially funded through 6 / 30 / 2026

55.05 / hr

Job Description :

  • Diagnostic Assessments and Evaluations : Perform initial and / or secondary diagnostic evaluation of Family Partner (FPs) clients as needed. Note behavioral symptoms and mental capacities which may indicate mental, emotional and / or behavioral health delays in patients.
  • Serve as a broker between client / family and providers and schools, assisting parents by maximizing their self-confidence and independence within the limits of the childs developmental delay;
  • Plan intervention programs and depositions of cases under treatment as needed to further Regional Center (RC) enrollment;
  • Provide crisis intervention, treatment plans, case management, and other related mental health services for clients and their families.
  • Providing second opinions when school-based diagnoses conflict with RC determination and / or are inconsistent with what the parents concerns may be;
  • Assess progress of clients on a selected basis and propose modifications to treatment plans as needed to meet parental goals;
  • Correct missed or inaccurate diagnoses or assessments;
  • Prepare and maintain psychosocial case histories for use in diagnostic evaluations and patient progress.
  • Facilitate communication with schools as needed to support the procurement of IEPs primarily in children ages P-5 and beyond as needed;
  • Facilitate communication between clients, family members, medical professionals, administrative staff, and school systems to ensure that HMG LA clients are receiving the support and care they need.
  • Systemic and Programmatic Improvement : Provide systemic and developmental support as it pertains to mental health services.
  • Check with program personnel periodically to ensure standards of care are met for early and latent child mental health practices;
  • Provide hands on technical support on the development of a cohesive mental health and developmental program;
  • Engage families in mental health services. The MHC may be a familys first introduction to mental health;
  • Strategize methods that reduce mental and behavioral health access barriers and disparities;
  • Coordinate with the Department of Mental Health to assess current referral pathways between DPH and DMH, make recommendations for improvement and sustainability;
  • Coaching and Training : Champion education and training development of HMG LA clients and staff on mental and behavioral health.
  • Lead training sessions or educational activities for HMG LA staff, associated clinical and provider staff, and Family Partners;
  • Coordinate trainings that promote parent / caregiver self-efficacy navigating mental, behavioral, and educational systems;
  • Represent HMG LA at speaking engagements, conferences, and trainings pertaining to mental and behavioral / emotional health services;
  • Study and makes suggestions or recommendations on special or complex cases beyond the project scope;
  • May engage in outreach and community-based service provision;
  • Collaborate with Family Partners on the design and effective delivery of Parent Cafes and other outreach events;
  • Promote mental and behavioral / emotional health training during Family Partner onboarding.
  • Reflective Supervision : Assist HMG LA staff as they work through complex emotions and responses to certain cases. These tasks may include :
  • Work with Family Partners and providers using reflective supervision and dyadic therapy models;
  • Identify areas for further staff training and development as it pertains to early and latent childhood development;
  • Provide reflective supervision to Family Partners and providers on an as-needed basis;
  • Facilitate collaborative dialogue and listening skills for and with Help Me Grow LA staff
  • Provide expert guidance and emotional support to staff and caregivers to mitigate the effects of secondary trauma, promoting resilience and well-being through consultation, debriefing, and evidence-based self-care strategies.

Skills :

  • Masters degree or higher in social work, psychology, or related field (e.g., LCSW, PhD)
  • Licensure in social work, psychology, or related field (e.g., LCSW, PhD) or expected licensure within 3 months of hire
  • Experience and extensive knowledge of mental health practices in families of children with special needs
  • Experience working with school districts on the development of IEPs
  • Specialization in child development and early childhood mental health
  • Experience working with low-income and multi-cultural communities
  • Background working with reflective supervision and / or dyadic therapy models
  • Sensitivity to socio-economic and psychosocial stressors impacting communities of color and varied ethnicities
  • Experience working with co-occurring disorders or mental / behavioral disabilities.
  • Strong organizational, communication and written skills
  • Ability to work and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team
  • Bilingual, English / Spanish language proficiency or fluency
