JOB SUMMARY :
Supports the Director in developing STEM programming and managing daily operations of the Science Outreach Center. Provides high-level oversight of laboratory safety, compliance, and chemical inventories while designing advanced science lab experiences for upper level high school students. Trains staff and students in safe practices, supervises student workers, manages budgets and registrations, and assists with funding efforts.
JOB DUTIES :
35% - Essential - Educational and Supportive Programming :
Supervises SOC staff and undergraduate students to develop, implement, promote, and assesses lab experiences designed to aid in meeting South Carolina K-12 science standards. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of K-12 national and state science standards and current teaching practices. Responsible for evaluating existing activities and overseeing the development of new offerings. Integrates technology and hands-on learning into programming. Engages in teaching STEM programs / activities to K-12 students and public.
30% - Essential - Advanced Laboratory Management and Development :
Provides high-level oversight of the Science Outreach Center laboratory, including chemical, biological, and equipment inventories. Ensures compliance with all university, state, and federal safety regulations regarding the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and biological materials. Develops and leads advanced laboratory experiences suitable for high school AP and dual-enrollment students, including experiments that require knowledge of microbiology (e.g., culturing bacteria) and advanced chemistry. Trains staff, student workers, and instructors in safe laboratory practices, preparation of reagents, and correct use of specialized equipment. Maintains updated safety protocols and serves as the Center's primary point of accountability for chemical and biological safety.
30% - Essential - Mentorship :
Leads regularly scheduled team meetings with staff and student workers. Discusses planning and organizing materials, time management strategies, and tracks completed assignments. Serves as a liaison for director, providing regular updates on SOC staff and student-worker performance.
5% - Essential - Fiscal Management :
Monitors area budget, ensuring that programs and services stay within the allocations and that expenditures are consistent with University policies and procedures. Works with Director to meet SOC revenue goals and to identify and secure external funding sources such as grants, donors, and corporate sponsorships.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :
Education - Bachelor's Degree and experience in education, management or business.
Work Experience 1+ years
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS :
Education - Master's Degree - Science Education or a scientific discipline
Work Experience 10+ years of teaching science at the high school or early undergraduate level. 5+ years of laboratory experience involving hazardous chemicals, bacterial culture, or advanced experimental techniques.

Provides Budget Input - Provides input into the budgeting process, and oversees fund allocation.
No Budget Responsibilities - No fiscal responsibility for the department's budget.

COMPENSATION INFORMATION
Anticipated Salary Range : $57,300 - $60,000
Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL
Normal Operations
Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
