Job Summary

The position of Regional Instrumentation Technician will primarily reside within the School of Polymer Science and Engineering at the Hattiesburg campus of the University of Southern Mississippi but will have duties and responsibilities that extend throughout the State of Mississippi.

The goal of this position is to support advanced instrumentation across multiple institutions in the state by providing training, operation, maintenance, and service, as well as delivering informal seminars and workshops to raise awareness and educate potential users in both academic and industrial settings.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, calibrate, and maintain complex analytical instruments to ensure consistent and accurate experimental results.
  • Induct and train new users to correctly and safely use the instrumentation.
  • Develop and document new analytical methodologies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory users.
  • Deliver informal seminars and workshops to stakeholders within the state to raise awareness and educate potential users in both academic and industrial settings.
  • Travel regularly to different institutions within the state to perform the duties listed above.
  • Collaborate with the Mississippi Research Alliance leadership for the further development of this program.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other Regional Instrumentation Technicians throughout the state.
  • Work with interdisciplinary collaborators across departments and institutions to support initiatives such as Mississippi INBRE and the Nano-Bio Immunoengineering Consortium (NIEC) and other such statewide projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and three (3) to six (6) years of experience in polymer chemistry, chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related field.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of soft materials characterization techniques (electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry, isothermal titration calorimetry, rheometry, and dynamic light scattering).
  • Knowledge of safety protocols, laboratory standards, and compliance requirements for instrumentation use.
  • Strong technical proficiency in operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and calibrating analytical instruments.
  • Instructional and training skills to induct new users and ensure safe, proper instrument use.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing complex responsibilities.
  • Ability to contribute to statewide program development, helping expand the Mississippi Research Alliance initiative.
  • Knowledge of method development and creation of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Communication skills (oral and written) to present workshops, write documentation, and report results clearly.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    Ph.D. in engineering, chemistry, materials science, or a related field with at least 2 years of relevant experience; OR Master's degree in one of these fields with at least 6 years of relevant experience; OR Bachelor's degree in one of these fields with at least 10 years of relevant experience.
