Summary
Blacksburg United Methodist Church seeks a fulltime Director of Music and Worship Arts (DMWA) to join our team to lead the continued growth of our music ministries and creative worship arts. The DMWA will equip people to serve and lead worship so that we engage spiritual seekers-that they will connect with God and the community of faith. Successful candidates will hold undergraduate or graduate degrees in music and / or sacred music, in addition to experience in choral conducting.
Duties
Music Ministry Oversight
- Provide leadership and / or coordination for all musical ensembles, including choirs, orchestra, handbells, praise bands, and children's and youth music ministries.
- Plan, rehearse, and present music for Sunday services and special worship events throughout the year.
- Supervise paid music staff; oversee and support other unpaid musicians.
- Maintain and care for church musical instruments and music libraries.
- Oversee weekly worship planning meetings and ensure alignment with the church's mission and vision.
Worship Leadership and Planning
Collaborate with the Lead Pastor to plan and lead meaningful, engaging worship experiences.Equip and empower others to serve and lead worship through mentorship and collaboration.Guide and support the Creative Design Team (CDT) and Worship Planning Team to develop themes, liturgies, and worship elements.Collaborate and support the Hospitality Ministry Team and others who serve in worship (e.g. ushers, altar guild, acolytes, liturgists).Assist in worship leadership across multiple styles and formats.Technical and Production Support
Collaborate with the A / V Production Manager to provide quality audio and video experiences in worship and other events.Oversee the setup for rehearsals, services, concerts, and productions.Support the integration of creative and digital media in worship.Administration and Communication
Submit worship orders and related materials for bulletins and digital media.Coordinate schedules for choirs, ensembles, and special programs.Attend staff and ministry team meetings as requested.Maintain accurate records, storage systems, and library organization for music and worship resources.Work with the Communications Director to update music ministry pages and event information on the church website and app.Manage budgets for music and worship, including restricted accounts.Perform other duties as assigned.Requirements
Bachelor of Science is Music and / or Sacred Music is required. Master of Music or its equivalent is preferred.Experience is church music, choral conducting, and worship planning necessary.Working knowledge of organ, piano, children's choirs, handbells, youth choirs, praise bands, and audio-visual worship resources.Continued theological and liturgical training and leadership and / or a willingness to do such training.Computer skills in word processing and music software necessary.Experience in management is strongly valued.Spiritual leadership through the music and worship arts ministry is strongly valued.Benefits
