Job description

Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician (DBP), reporting to the Network Pediatric Medical Director for the Family Health Centers (FHC) at NYU Langone, in conjunction with the Clinical Director of the NYU Langone Child Study Center within the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. This position will focus on specialized clinical care and education related to developmental and behavioral disorders in children and adolescents in two settings : the outpatient Pediatrics division of the FHC and the Child Study Center.

The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and FHC, are seeking a Board Certified / Eligible (BC / BE) Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician to join as a faculty member. This position will focus on specialized clinical care and education related to developmental and behavioral disorders in children and adolescents in two settings : the outpatient Pediatrics division of the FHC and the Child Study Center.

In the work at the FHC (0.31 FTE), the DBP will be key personnel in the SAMHSA Project LAUNCH Grant (SM-23-004 ) which has created a program to implement and improve the wellness of Brooklyn's youngest children (0-8 year olds) for addressing the social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and behavioral aspects of their development, with a unique focus on assessing and diagnosing neurodevelopmental disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) among young children within FHC's catchment area.

In the work at the Child Study Center (0.69FTE), the DBP will work closely with the ASD service, the psychopharmacology service, and the early childhood service (amongst others) to enhance the capacity of the Child Study Center to provide more specialized care to children with developmental needs within these populations and address complex medical concerns with the clinical faculty caring for these patients.

Unlike a Neurodevelopmental Psychiatrist who primarily focuses on psychiatric conditions related to brain development, the DBP will provide a more holistic approach to child development, encompassing physical, behavioral, and cognitive aspects.

The successful candidate will contribute to clinical care and teaching of developmental behavioral pediatrics in child and adolescent populations across several areas of programmatic / clinical need. This includes attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), ASD, learning disabilities, emotional disorders, intellectual disability, developmental / psychiatric concerns due to a known or suspected congenital or genetic condition (e.g. CP, Down) and medically complex patients, among others.

The DBP will diagnose and manage these conditions and refer patients for further assessment when necessary. This is a key distinction from a Neurodevelopmental Psychiatrist who may conduct more comprehensive psychiatric testing themselves.

The position will also provide opportunities for research, and growth in clinical research skills. The Division is a leader in DBP research, with a focus on preventive interventions and health equity. While the ideal candidate will have an interest in research, prior experience is not required.

Job Responsibilities :

FHC SAMHSA Project Launch Grant (0.31FTE)

  • Provide clinical care and teaching in the outpatient setting. Our outpatient settings encompass multiple clinical sites with varied patient populations, some (notably at the FHC) including underserved, largely immigrant families.
  • Teach, including clinical supervision and mentorship of medical students, Pediatric and Child Neurology residents and Fellows in DBP, as well as providing didactic teaching and guest lectures. This educational role is a unique aspect of the DBP position, as they often work closely with other professionals, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, educators, pediatrics, neurology, and genetics to provide comprehensive care.
  • Provide direct clinical care to all patients assigned, in accordance with applicable standards of care, FHC policies and procedures and Hospital policies and procedures, as applicable.
  • Maintain good citizenship standards designed to optimize patient care and service and the smooth operation of the FHC. Such standards include but are not limited to the following : Accommodating walk-in patients, arriving for office sessions on time and remaining throughout each session, engaging in teamwork with the support staff, following FHC procedures and practice guidelines, e.g., appropriate clinical charting with complete notes and up-to-date problem and medication lists, timely completion of encounter forms, completing peer chart audits, etc.
  • Meet specialty defined productivity expectations established by the FHC network.
  • Complete accurately and timely any paperwork necessary to facilitate FHC billing and reimbursement.
  • Participate in the FHC's Quality program through the review of healthcare gap reports (e.g. Azara, payor gap lists) and the FHC Quality SmartSet to identify and address health maintenance gaps for patients attributed to the practice.
  • Comply with the credentialing requirements of NYU Langone Hospitals Medical Staff and participate in continuing education activities.
  • Adhere and support the Medical Staff bylaws, Joint Commission standards and state and federal guidelines as per the agency's needs.
  • Participate in committees and conduct other duties as assigned by supervisor. Attend and participate in regular site meetings.
  • Bridge the gap between general pediatrics and psychiatry, providing a specialized focus on developmental and behavioral disorders. The DBP will play a key role in helping families understand the unique needs of their children and the value of specialized pediatric care.
