Compensation information is provided below with ranges for each level; actual offers are based on qualifications, skills, experience, and location.
Responsibilities
- Monitoring, supporting, and improving the applications used by Reliability, Tariff, Scheduling, Balancing, and Market Operators. Ensure all systems and processes use correct input data and produce accurate results for Operators.
- Identify needed ICCP data to maintain superior real-time monitoring and state estimator results.
- Work with Members to obtain all necessary Reliability and Market related changes as they pertain to operational models used in EMS.
- Assist in testing and implementing software changes for Operations-based applications such as EMS, ICCP, and MOS.
- Support analysis of normal / abnormal events and recommend changes to processes / software.
- Support, develop, and improve Operations applications such as Real Time Contingency Analysis, Load Forecast, Market Flow calculator, Market System, and Constraint Manager.
- Research, document, and report issues from SPP Staff, Members, non-Members, and Market Participants related to system results.
- Prepare and validate data, execute computer runs for current and next-day operational assessments of the transmission network, including reliability and market feasibility analyses.
- Coordinate and approve generation and transmission maintenance outage requests (including emergency / forced outages).
- Continuously monitor market and reliability systems and take actions as necessary to maintain accuracy and reliability.
- Respond quickly to unexpected events such as sudden loading changes, data feed issues, or data exchange interruptions.
- Develop and update SPP network model data for near-real-time analysis.
- Make recommendations to management on long-range coordinated operations goals and objectives.
- Adhere to SPP Policies and Procedures and communicate with members, consultants, and participants about ongoing activities.
- Assist the Manager, Operations Engineering and other Engineers on special projects; coach and mentor other Engineers; collaborate with Operations Quality Assurance on training and documentation.
- Develop and test existing and new Operation Situational Awareness tools; ensure timely training for personnel.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert for shift engineer processes and provide leadership in the operations engineering group.
- Demonstrate the ability to make technical and project-management level decisions; balance standard and non-standard techniques; align work with SPP Culture Drivers, Mission, and Core Values.
Qualifications
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Engineering from a university meeting PE exam eligibility (e.g., ABET-accredited) with a calculus-based engineering focus; preferred programs include Electrical, Computer, Industrial, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering.Experience Requirements
Shift Engineer I – No experience requiredShift Engineer II – Two (2) years of job-related experienceSenior Shift Engineer – Five (5) years of relevant engineering experience; Professional Engineer license may satisfy one yearRequired
Professional Certification : NERC Reliability Coordinator Certification and NERC PER-005 desk qualified, or ability to obtain within six months of employmentAbility to work rotating shiftsProficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, timekeeping; strong knowledge of power systems analysis tools (steady-state, dynamic, short circuit, or databases)Strong interpersonal, teamwork, written, and verbal communication skillsProficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, AccessCommitment to SPP Policies and ProceduresPreferred
Professional Engineer LicenseAdvanced degree in a related fieldElectric Utility industry experienceProficiency with SPP power systems analysis tools and processes; understanding of SPP tariffs, FERC / NERC governing documents, SPP By-Laws, and committee structureWork Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment and requires use of standard office equipment.
Position Type And Hours
Full-time, with rotating shift schedules and long hours.
Travel
Minimal travel (approximately 0-10%).
