This role focuses on building and enhancing shared libraries and core platform components that support Kafka based, event driven applications. The work plays a critical part in enabling application teams to deliver new features efficiently by improving how they interact with and integrate with the underlying platform. The position includes developing new capabilities within internal tooling, automation frameworks, and platform services to help engineering teams work more consistently and effectively. Collaboration with application teams is a key aspect of the role, ensuring systems follow best practices for reliability, observability, performance, and scalability. This opportunity offers broad exposure across multiple applications and distributed systems, providing hands-on experience with event streaming, platform engineering, and real time system design. It is well suited for someone who wants to contribute to foundational engineering capabilities and have a meaningful impact across an entire technology organization. We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position will be based in Plano, TX or San Antonio, TX. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
Under direct supervision, design, develop, code, and test technical solutions. Write code to deliver features, and improvements, on a regular basis. Verify and resolve technical problems and production issues through troubleshooting techniques. Improve application stability and scalability. Create and maintain technical documentation. Create and improve automated tests and code quality. Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
Bachelor's Degree or 4 additional years of experience beyond the minimum requirement can be used in lieu of a degree OR Approved certification from CodeUp, Galvanize, VetFIT (Veterans for IT) or eFIT (Employees for IT). Up to 2 years of software development experience. Foundational and conceptual knowledge of function / discipline and demonstrated application of knowledge, skills, and abilities towards work products. Basic Understanding of one or more of the following : Java, Swift, Objective-C, Cobol, JavaScript, Kotlin, C++, HTML, CSS, SQL, Go, and Python. Ability to effectively articulate technical challenges and solutions. Basic understanding of cloud technologies and tools.
Experience in Java and Spring Boot. Basic understanding of backend service development / practices. Familiarity with Apache Kafka concepts (producers, consumers, topics, consumer groups). Basic unit testing practices. Familiarity with Git. Experience with CI / CD Pipeline.
The salary range for this position is : $63,590.00- $121,530.00 USAA does not provide visa sponsorship for this role. Compensation : USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
