What You Can Expect
As a Utility Plant Maintenance Mechanic I at the University of Iowa, you will help ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of ENGIE's utility plant systems. Working under general supervision, you will assist with the installation and repair of piping, perform preventive and corrective maintenance on plant equipment, and support day-to-day mechanical and carpentry work. Your contributions will help maintain consistent plant operations that support critical campus infrastructure.
Reporting to the Utilities Energy Supervisor, your roles and responsibilities include :
Assists with troubleshooting and maintaining the following equipment :
Water tube boilers including fans, blowers, grates, feeders, etc.
Steam turbines, pumps and related equipment
Hydraulic and compressed air systems including compressors, dryers and regulators.
Pollution control equipment including dust collectors, baghouses, centrifugal collectors etc.
Material handling systems including conveyors, bucket elevators, crushers, slide gates, chutes, etc.
Installs and repairs piping for low pressure (less than 100 psig) steam, water and compressed air systems, including piping of carbon steel, galvanized, stainless, copper and plastic. Uses flanged, threaded, glued, or soldered connections.
Uses oxygen-acetylene torch and plasma cutter for cutting steel, stainless steel and other metals to fabricate chutes, base plates, brackets, etc.
Performs general carpentry work such as construction of concrete forms, pouring concrete and refractory, and general construction needs.
Coordinate daily work activities and equipment status with other Plant employees.
Utilize a CMMS for writing and completing work orders with notes.
Performs preventive and repair maintenance work tasks on plant equipment.
Perform the housekeeping functions and equipment cleaning necessary to maintain the Plant in a clean and neat condition.
Carries out other duties as assigned.
What You'll Bring
Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED. Trade, vocational, or military technical training in mechanical or maintenance disciplines beneficial.
This is an entry-level position that provides hands-on experience in utility plant operations and maintenance. Successful performance in this role can lead to future opportunities and career advancement within ENGIE's plant operations and maintenance teams.
Experience in an industrial, process, or utility plant maintenance environment with exposure to rotating equipment and system repair; completion of a two-year technical degree in industrial maintenance also acceptable.
Working knowledge or ability to learn pipefitting, metal cutting, fabrication, basic carpentry, and rigging techniques.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, system drawings, and technical manuals.
Strong problem-solving skills with attention to safety, documentation, and communication.
Additional Details
This role requires attendance at a worksite on a daily basis.
You must possess a valid U.S. driver's license / clean driving record, operation of company owned vehicles is required
Required to have a personal telephone to be able to receive emergency notifications.
Ability to meet highest attendance requirements.
Ability to communicate effectively, written, verbally, and digitally using a company provided computer working with standard software applications (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).
Must be physically capable to hear and understand audible alarms, detect changes in noise levels of rotating equipment and portable radio communication.
Capable of frequently standing; walking; balancing; sitting; climbing (ladders, stairs, ramps, catwalks and the like as required); kneeling; pushing; pulling; lifting.
Capable of performing repetitive motions as required.
Must be physically capable of entering and working in a confined space (crawl spaces, shafts, small enclosed areas, pipes and the like) as required.
Must be physically capable of wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to half and full-face respirators, fall protection equipment, hardhat, safety shoes, safety glasses, etc.
Working Environment (Indoors - 90% Outdoors - 10%)
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
The Power Plant can be an extremely hot environment.
Areas of the Power Plant can be dusty.
The Power Plant noise level is usually moderate to high.
Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies.
Compensation
Hourly Range : $23.65 - $39.37 USD hourly
This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.
ENGIE complies with all federal, state, and local minimum wage laws. Actual salary offered may vary depending on geography, experience, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors.
In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for a competitive bonus / incentive plan.
