DESCRIPTION

The CW3E Hydrologist will develop, test, and validate CW3E's WRF-Hydro (National Water Model) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) based hydrologic monitoring / forecasting system, as well as set up new forecast domains and their near real time operations and delivery of forecast products to project partners. The position will develop, test, operate, and validate different short-term river forecasting chain based different sources of deterministic and ensemble weather forecasts.

The position will also perform hydrologic impact analysis for various sectors under climate change and lead scientific journal publications on the findings. The position will also help conduct tech transfers to sponsoring agencies and develop new proposals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in related area. Doctor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training preferred.

Thorough knowledge of research function. Deep expertise and rich experience in both physically based hydrologic modeling (e.g., WRF-Hydro) and machine learning (e.g. different types of NN-based methods) especially over the Western US, including model development / improvement, large-scale implementation, validation, and analysis. A good record of research publications in peer-reviewed journals is a plus.

Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming. Experience in continental-to-global scale hydroclimate analysis (streamflow, snow, groundwater, and soil moisture) for important scientific discoveries. Expertise in flood and drought analysis through modeling and large data. Experience in working in High Performance Computing (HPC) and large data environment, e.g., parallel computing, computing job management, coding / scripting for HPC applications.

Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing. Skills in scientific graphical representation, scientific writing and experience presenting at scientific conferences (poster, and oral presentations).

Skills in project management. Strong time management skills. Can prioritize tasks. Meets deadlines. Able to organize communications with sponsors and make workplans accordingly,

Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations. This includes proposing new analyses, new conceptual ideas, or new workflow recommendations.

Thorough skills in analysis and consultation. Knowledge on how to apply research to water resources engineering problems.

Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with the ability to work independently or within a team framework in conjunction with principles of community with staff, faculty, researchers, and students.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Travel is required to different offsite locations / Must be willing to travel.

Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $88,000 - $161,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $42.15 - $77.39
