Inpatient Coding Specialist – Acute Care (IP Coding)
Location : United States (Remote – Work From Home)
Employment Type : Full-Time
Compensation & Incentives
Hourly Pay Range : $24.61 – $34.00 (commensurate with experience)
Compensation is aligned with years of acute-care inpatient coding experience
Position Overview
The Inpatient Coding Specialist is responsible for reviewing and evaluating inpatient hospital medical records to accurately assign, sequence, validate, and edit ICD-10-CM , ICD-10-PCS , and DRGs . This role supports multiple acute care hospitals and ensures compliance with official coding guidelines, regulatory standards, and organizational productivity and quality benchmarks.
This position is ideal for experienced acute-care inpatient DRG coders who are detail-oriented, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently in a fully remote, performance-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
Assign, sequence, validate, and / or edit ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS codes, and DRGs for inpatient hospital records
Review complete medical records to support accurate and compliant coding decisions
Abstract and validate key data elements, including physician documentation, discharge disposition, and query tracking
Apply official coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and payer rules
Identify and resolve coding edits, denials, and quality issues
Respond to internal and customer coding inquiries as needed
Participate in coding audits and quality reviews
Maintain consistency across multiple facilities and service lines
Meet or exceed established productivity and accuracy standards in a remote setting
Required Qualifications
3–5 years of recent acute-care inpatient hospital coding experience
Hands-on experience with IP DRG coding in an acute-care hospital environment
Strong working knowledge of :
ICD-10-CM
ICD-10-PCS
DRG assignment
Present on Admission (POA) indicators
Active RHIT, RHIA, or CCS certification
Demonstrated ability to meet productivity and quality benchmarks
Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management (HIM) or Health Information Technology (HIT)
Experience coding across multiple inpatient facilities
Prior coding audit or quality review experience
