Opportunity: Surgical Assistant - Surgical Assistant
Job Details: Function as Surgical First or Second Assistant to surgeon for complex and basic operative or invasive procedures
Primarily for Orthopedic procedures
Perform variety of procedures or specialize in surgical specialty where appropriate
May perform responsibilities of Surgical Technologist if required but preferably not simultaneously while functioning as first assist
Variable start times for day shift (anywhere between 5:30 AM - 7:00 AM)
Patient ratio: 1:1
Required certifications: BLS (first assist must have first assist skills checklist, not general ORT skills checklist)
2 years of experience required
Not recommended for first-time travelers
Cross-trained to all Main OR specialties and Urology center but no floating to other hospitals
Patient types include: Neuro/ENT, Orthopedic, General: Breasts/Plastics, Vascular, Laparoscopic, General Oncology, Genitourinary (GU), Gynecology (GYN), Robots
On-call requirements: 30-minute response time with call schedules varying by specialty
Orthopedic Surgical Assistants: 1 day each week Monday-Thursday (8-week call schedule) and 1 call weekend every 5 weeks (Friday through Sunday)
General/Neuro: EOS call with 10 slots (Monday through Friday) and 1-2 weekends (Saturday and Sunday)
Orientation: 1-1½ weeks depending on team and shift
Charting systems: EPIC, Alaris, Pyxis
Surgical scrubs provided by hospital; scrub caps allowed but must be covered by surgical bouffant
Support available from Charge Nurse, Leads, and Supervisors
Facility: This comprehensive medical center is a 938-bed healthcare facility that serves as a Level III Trauma Center with specialized services including a Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center designation. The facility holds Magnet designation and features 21 operating room beds. The surgical department specializes in multiple areas including neurology/ENT, orthopedics, general surgery, vascular procedures, laparoscopic surgery, oncology, genitourinary, gynecology, and robotic surgery. The facility maintains modern equipment and comprehensive support systems to ensure high-quality patient care.
