The San Francisco Standard is seeking a visionary editor to lead our AI and Big Technology coverage, focusing on the inner and outer lives of AI companies and Big Tech players that are in our backyard, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Perplexity and other emerging AI titans. Working with The Standard’s journalists, you will have a unique opportunity to shape how our readers understand the AI technology and people reshaping our city, our work, and our lives.
You will develop comprehensive coverage that spans the key AI players and their intersection with San Francisco, the impact of these companies on our city, politics, economy, and environment, and the ways their technology and business models fundamentally alter how people all over the world live and work. You will be responsible for leading unique coverage, working with reporters to pursue scoops of fact and thinking on the most influential industry of our time.
This is a full-time, in-office position.
Responsibilities
- Lead AI and Big Technology coverage in the San Francisco area, focusing on the intersection of AI companies and Big Tech with local impact.
- Collaborate with reporters to develop enterprise and investigative stories, pursuing scoops and in-depth analysis.
- Guide complex, technical reporting for general audiences and ensure accuracy and clear storytelling.
- Cultivate sources within the technology industry to build a strong newsroom network.
- Shape coverage that informs readers about technology, politics, economy, and environmental implications.
Qualifications
Proven experience as an editor, preferably with significant experience covering technology, business, or investigative journalismExcellent editing skills with demonstrated ability to guide complex, technical reporting and translate industry developments for general audiencesUnderstanding of the AI and Big Tech landscape, including key companies, technologies, business models, and regulatory environmentStrong network of sources within the technology industry or proven ability to develop such relationships quicklyExperience leading enterprise and investigative reporting, with a track record of breaking significant storiesFamiliarity with digital publishing, audience engagement, and social media platformsUnderstanding of data journalism techniques and comfort with technology tools for reporting and analysisPreferred
Previous experience covering AI, machine learning, or emerging technologiesUnderstanding of venture capital, startup ecosystems, and technology business modelsExperience with public records requests, financial document analysis, and investigative techniquesBackground in technology journalism or business reportingKnowledge of San Francisco's relationship with the technology industry and its impact on the citySpanish language proficiencyEmployment type
