Equipment Operator
Operates heavy construction equipment to build and maintain water supply and wastewater disposal lines and facilities, access roads and adjacent terrain; services machines; makes repairs and adjustments on machines and equipment; assists mechanic with major repairs.
Essential Functions :
- Operates heavy construction equipment, including, but not limited to loaders, backhoes, motor graders, etc., to build and maintain water supply and wastewater disposal lines and facilities, access roads, and adjacent terrain
- Operates dump trucks, utility tractors, hand tools, etc., in support of project work
- Services machines; makes repairs and adjustments to machines and equipment; assists mechanic with major repairs
- Maintains records of fuel, oil, parts and supplies used
- Completes the Department of Transportation truck inspection list
- Clears and grubs sites; excavates for site work; installs drainage pipes and places rip-rap in drainage outlets; re-seeds, limes and fertilizes sites
- At times takes on role as crew leader
- Available to assist the Billing Department on a monthly basis for water service disconnections and restorations.
- Performs standby duties on a rotational basis.

Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary's County Metropolitan Commission policies and proceduresAbility to act as a representative of St. Mary's County Metropolitan Commission to the publicAbility to safely operate heavy equipment, machinery, and toolsKnowledge of relevant maintenance and repair practices and proceduresKnowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for ensuring safetyAbility to effectively communicate with other staff membersAbility to prepare and maintain accurate recordsAbility to obtain a valid Maryland Commercial Driver's License, Class A.Obtain flagger training.Required Qualifications :
Training and / or Education : High school diploma or G.E.D. and five or more years of experience operating heavy equipment; three years of which must have been at the journeyman levelExperience : Or equivalent technical training, education, and / or experienceLicenses or Certificates : Must possess a valid Maryland Commercial Driver's License, Class A or obtain within 18 months. Must obtain a Water Distribution License within 18 months.Supplemental Information :
Physical Demands : Work requires constant physical effort in the handling of heavy tools, equipment, or materials or 60 pounds or more.Unusual Demands : Work environment involves high risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts and machines. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, goggles, boots and gloves; may require working in adverse weather conditions or confined spaces.
