Gate Inspector
The Gate Inspector is responsible for inspecting containers arriving and departing from the railroad facility using an automated computerized gate system. This includes inspecting each trailer and container for damage and completing necessary paperwork. Responsibilities include inspecting all intermodal units for unit number and damage using an automated computerized gate system, maintaining accuracy of all trailer / container inspections, ensuring that all security seals are intact, overseeing and documenting any damage to arriving or departing units with timeliness and accuracy, clearly outlining and communicating all damage incurred on appropriate forms and / or computer system, understanding the risk assessment and risk management process to help identify, evaluate, and manage potential risks, maintaining a quality environment where performance inspections are handled safely and accident-free, ensuring compliance with HAZMAT and OSHA regulations, including reporting any incidents immediately, wearing personal protection equipment (PPE) such as safety vest, safety glasses, and protective hard hat when applicable, communicating clearly with truck drivers while performing inspections, identifying terminal lanes not in use and placing appropriate cones to notify drivers, being familiar with all parts and nomenclature of the various areas of the intermodal units while maintaining a safe distance from moving vehicles, and completing all required paperwork for the customer accurately.
Essential skills include the ability to stand on feet for 8 hours at a time, professional communication skills with drivers, basic computer skills for documentation, and the capability to work outside in various weather conditions for 8 hours. Additional skills and qualifications include excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Candidates will work both inside and outside of the gatehouse. During slower periods, paperwork will be completed inside the office. The role involves working with another inspector on the same shift. Personal protection equipment (PPE) such as safety vest, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and protective hard hat are required when applicable. The position is for the late first shift, 10-6 pm, with training on an 8-4 pm shift for approximately two weeks.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $15.00 / hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
