Technical Specialist-Transfusion Services

Summary

The Technical Specialist-Transfusion Services in blood bank technology performs both routine and specialized tests in blood center and transfusion services, using methodology that conforms to the Standards for Blood Centers and Transfusion Services of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). Coordinates activities with other members of the laboratory team. Performs routine laboratory work.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education : Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science.
• Experience : Two (2) years experience as an MLS or MLT in the specialty of transfusion services in the last five (5) years.
• Licensure / Certification / Registration : Board Certified as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS or MT), must obtain ASCP certification as Specialist in Blood Bank (SBB) within thirty (30) months of hire into this position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Intermediate : Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Intermediate : Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, or procedures.

Intermediate : Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group situations or before groups of customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Intermediate Skills : Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals and to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw or interpret bar graphs to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Intermediate Skills : Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Typical Noise Level - Moderate noise (examples : business office with computers and printers, light traffic)

May be exposed to infection and diseases bearing specimens; exposed to odorous chemicals. Color Vision; regularly exposed to risk of blood borne diseases. Exposed to reagents used in laboratory testing; may be exposed to / occasionally exposed to unpleasant patient elements. Exposed to hazards from electrical and mechanical equipment.
